Black History Month Feature | Ravi Bali

Today’s Black History Month feature is Ravi Bali, Vice President of Human Resources at SGH. His role allows him to do what he loves most, which is helping others advance in their careers by fostering a corporate culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion where every employee feels empowered to succeed. During our interview, Ravi spoke about the work his team is doing to promote diversity in the workplace, such as developing a diverse candidate pool for new hires, investing in educational programs for the underrepresented, and cultivating a culture that embraces different perspectives. Read more to learn about Ravi’s story on becoming an ally to the black community.?

SGH: Why is it important to celebrate Black History month??

Ravi Bali [RB]: I was raised in India and unfortunately Black history was not part of our educational curriculum. In the past thirty years, I have made a concerted effort to learn about not only Black history but Black history as America’s history. It’s important to celebrate black history month to learn about the influential leaders who have touched our lives and made a difference in how we live today. This month shows us how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go.?

SGH: What does being an ally to the black community mean to you??

RB: Being an ally to the black community is listening without personal bias or opinion. It’s continuing to learn and educate yourself about black history and culture while doing your part to support change for a more inclusive society.????

SGH: How does SGH practice diversity and inclusion??

RB: I believe SGH fosters a diverse and inclusive culture that makes employees feel valued and heard. So much so they feel comfortable speaking up on their concerns and opinions without fear of backlash.??

Our talent acquisition efforts are focused on sourcing candidates from diverse backgrounds to ensure our company culture reflects different perspectives and ways of thinking. As a member of our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) committee, I can report that we are developing programs to strengthen and advance our employees’ careers with our core values in mind: put people first, act with purpose, drive progress, and deliver results.??

SGH: What's your favorite mantra or quote??

RB: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi?
