Black History Month - Book Series Blog

During Black History Month, the Peer Power Foundation is proud to partner with Equity and Access, MSCS, and Literacy Mid-south to celebrate black culture, history, and achievements. As part of this special initiative, our Program Directors have each chosen an influential book that showcases black liberation.

Danielle Nelson selected "Walking with the Wind", the powerful memoir of civil rights leader John Lewis. In her own words, Danielle described the book as "heartbreaking yet inspiring" - providing critical behind-the-scenes insights into Lewis' courageous involvement in the civil rights movement. She highlighted both the terror and triumphs that Lewis endured, showing how his steadfast moral conviction and leadership paved the way for progress.

Ultimately, Danielle felt that "Walking with the Wind" challenged preconceived notions and stretched one's understanding of that pivotal time period. By directly conveying Lewis' harrowing first-hand account, the memoir enables readers of all backgrounds to walk briefly in his shoes. They gain greater knowledge of the era's complexities, while feeling deep admiration for those that risked everything for equality.

The Peer Power Foundation hopes Danielle's perspective, along with our other Directors' featured books, will motivate and uplift. We aim to advance access, amplify marginalized voices, and inspire new generations to carry forward the still-ongoing fight for justice. Because black history is essential and interconnected with the shared history of all Americans.
