US Army Black Hawk helicopter crashes in Honduras after Mayday call, investigation ongoing
A US Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1-228th Aviation Regiment made a precautionary emergency landing approximately five miles east of Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, on March 5, after declaring a Mayday emergency. The aircraft sustained significant damage, particularly to its tail section, but all five crew members were evaluated by medical personnel with no significant injuries reported. The helicopter was conducting routine training at the time, and an investigation is underway to determine whether mechanical failure or human factors contributed to the incident. FAA Tightens Air Traffic Staffing Rules at Reagan Airport After Fatal Crash
The Federal Aviation Administration has implemented stricter air traffic control staffing regulations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport following a fatal midair collision on January 29, 2025. An Army helicopter collided with an American Airlines regional jet, killing 67 people, after a single controller was overseeing both helicopter operations and fixed-wing aircraft arrivals and departures. Investigators are examining whether the early combination of control responsibilities, approximately an hour ahead of standard procedure, contributed to the crash, prompting the FAA to revise staffing requirements to prevent similar occurrences. FAA Staffing Cuts and Shutdown Risk Raise Aviation Safety Concerns
Aviation leaders warned Congress that recent layoffs of approximately 400 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees and a potential government shutdown in mid-March could impact U.S. aviation safety by further straining the air traffic control system. During the hearing, industry representatives criticized the lack of prior safety assessments before the terminations and expressed concerns over controller shortages, delayed hiring efforts, and training bottlenecks. While air traffic controllers were exempt from the layoffs, union leaders emphasized that increased workloads and staffing pressures could create vulnerabilities in an already strained system handling 45,000 flights daily. SARPcheck global aviation safety audit: A wet lease, codeshare, ACMI Booster
SARPcheck is a new global aviation safety audit that assesses airline compliance with select ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) across defined ICAO Annexes. The primary aim of this audit is to enhance global flight safety while providing an affordable and accessible tool to facilitate ACMI, wet lease, and codeshare operations. The ICAO Annexes and SARPs that SARPcheck focuses on are specifically those outlined by regulatory and industry standards, including FAA requirements for overseeing foreign air carriers and the TCO approval elements of EASA.
SARPcheck is governed by a London-based not-for-profit organization, the Safety Audit Review Partnership (SARP Ltd.), which accredits Safety Quality Organizations (SQOs) such as AEROTHRIVE to conduct these audits globally. Detailed information about the program, including the SARPcheck Program Manual (SCPM), informative brochures, and the latest updates, is available on our website at https://aerothrive.com/audits/sarpcheck-audits/. For further inquiries or personal assistance, please feel free to send me a message. I'm always happy to help! Lufthansa City Airlines is the global launch customer of SARPcheck.
