Black Futures and the Map to a New World

"... the map to a new world is in the imagination," says Robin D. G. Kelley in her book Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination. This Black History Month, in our recently-launched Black Futures work, we explore the role of the imagination in mentally creating that more whole, just world as a blueprint for reality. This work was inspired by the alarming discovery, through our research, that Black median income in Atlanta (our home city) is projected to lag behind all other groups' for 200 years, with virtually no change. Our humble contribution to a challenge of this magnitude is to unite our passion and work in tapping the power of the imagination as the precursor to radical change, with the insights of imagination-seeking luminaries, including Ruha Benjamin, whose recent book on imagination as a manifesto for social change is profiled below. #blackfutures #imagination
No End In Sight
Our research, based on projections made from U.S. Census data, suggests that Black median income would remain virtually unchanged for 200 years, whereas Hispanic median income nearly closes the gap with White median income and Asian median income surpasses it. We also compared Atlanta to other wealthy and/or unequal cities, to determine how Atlanta, which up until recently has held the record for the city with the highest income inequality in America, fares. Ruha Benjamin, in her book Imagination: A Manifesto, imagines a "collective imagination, as when we imagine different worlds together, writing shared stories and plotting futures in which we can all flourish." And to her, "imagination isn't a luxury. It is a vital resource and powerful tool for collective liberation." To utilize imagination, she says, it needs to be sparked into a fire. "...
