For Forty Years my shield has been draped with a mourning band. At first, it was my memorial for Police Officer Thomas Schimenti who died in a shootout in which I was wounded. It was the least I could do to remember him and that tragic day. It is with sadness and honor to keep the memory of his valiant actions in the line of duty that cost him his life.
As time marched on the black band became an even stronger reminder of how blessed I was that day so long ago. I lived and was able to be a father to a great bunch of kids and now enjoy grandkids they are giving me. All this time has been a gift from God and I recognize it always.
So, you see my detective shield is both an honor and a responsibility. Having been able to serve with some of the greatest and bravest human beings on the face of the earth was and always be the honor. Respecting those men and women who helped mold me is a heavy responsibility that I don’t take lightly.
With the decay that seems to be eroding the public order and bringing with it utter disrespect, disdain and outright hatred for today’s officer's citizens are called to step up and support the ones that keep us safe. Saying “thank you for your service” is a small way to counter those who dislike the role law enforcement occupies.
Protect and Serve is the moral code of all police departments and first responders.
In that context accidents, vicious crimes, horrible maiming, kidnapping, sexual assaults, deaths of all kinds are handled daily. In responding to the needs of society 134 officers have died in the line of duty last year. Another 228 succumbed to the overwhelming sights and experiences and perished by suicide.
Without my brothers and sister who wear the badge, there would be chaos in the streets, society would devolve and be ruled by thugs and criminals. The rule of law would breakdown.
Safety would be a fleeting thing. Without renewed respect and support no one will be attracted to this honorable and needed profession. Being a law enforcement officer is a lifelong thing. Ask any retired officer and you will find that they will still run towards trouble if needed.
