Black AF History

This Juneteenth, I want to spotlight "Black AF History," a powerful book that provides a nuanced exploration of African American history in a way many have not experienced. I read a lot, but I don't often share book reviews. This book is extraordinary...definitely my favorite history book.???

The book is both a celebration and a critical examination of the contributions, struggles, and resilience of Black Americans throughout history.

As we observe Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom and African American culture, "Black AF History" serves as a vital educational tool. It encourages reflection on the past while inspiring a more informed and inclusive approach to history. I highly recommend this book to anyone committed to understanding the full scope of American history and supporting continued education and discussion around the contributions of the Black community.

Harriot challenges conventional perspectives, offering new insights and highlighting the achievements of Black individuals across various fields. I was astonished to learn about leaders like Moses Dickson, founder of the Knights of Liberty and who spent a decade organizing 50,000 Black men across the South for an insurrection that was called off on account of the Civil War starting.? How could I not know about Dickson?? And little things too. For some reason, I’ve known since grade school that George Washington had wooden teeth. But did you know that Washington purchased teeth from enslaved people, possibly for transplantation?? Bit of a different story.

Each chapter is thoughtfully constructed, ensuring that readers not only gain information but also connect emotionally with the historical figures and events described. Harriot also weaves in compelling stories of his own family and his youth to draw lines connecting history with today.

The breadth of topics covered in "Black AF History" is particularly impressive.
