Those who have experienced tragedy or trauma and survived these events must discover a deeper meaning in their lives.
When Moving Forward Seems Impossible
Standing on the balcony of my hotel overlooking LA, a cacophony of sounds filled the air. Earlier that day, I'd been laughing with the friend I was traveling with, and later on that evening, I was going to attend a private, invitation-only rooftop event.
On the outside, it all looked right, but on the inside, in my mind, there was a compulsion to permanently end the pain no one else could see.
No one else knew, not because they missed anything but because from way back in my childhood, I had learned to be masterful at hiding my pain.
I can viscerally remember that time in my life because the pain was overwhelming. But I kept moving forward, even if it was a little step each day. And that's what I want to encourage you to do. However, it's crucial to understand that in the face of tragedy, what kept me going was not the mind.
The mind will lie to you; when the mind insists that the pain is insurmountable, each step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to your true strength. It's a sign that you are not giving in to despair but are staying connected to something more significant than the pain, something greater than your ego-mind.
Despite contemporary indoctrination about a positive "mindset," willpower will not and cannot move you through devastation. The mind, or for that matter, your passions, are not powerful enough to get you through. That is not its job!
With more than thirty years of experience as a "transformational Catalyst" working with clients from a multitude of industries and cultural backgrounds, I have a massive amount of anecdotal, neuroscientific, and psychological evidence that the mind will not get you to where you need to go, where you soulfully know you must go.
The mind is by its nature focused on comfort and safety; these things are found in the familiar. Of course, we can build up the mind's resilience to bounce back, but the problem with "bouncing back" is that even if we bounce back, it's to the same place. However, what gets us through these life-changing challenges, to be able to experience a profound level of transformation requires a guide to Meaning and Purpose.
Being connected to Meaning and Purpose is an "anti-fragile" process that tells us, "This pain, this struggle may seem like it's going to break me, but what it's doing is breaking down the walls to my soul's Purpose. This struggle, this pain, is inherently happening for me, not to me; it's directing me home to develop a stronger connection to why I'm here on the planet."
The Quest for Meaning
Tragedy often catalyzes a quest for Meaning and Purpose, which enables a more profound curiosity about who and what we are below the titles and accolades.
Only by examining the meaning we automatically assign to anything, especially life's dramatic events, can we begin to question if that meaning is, in fact, our authentic meaning.
When we are willing to examine the meaning we've espoused and distinguish between that and the meaning calling to us at a soulful level, we become available to, hear, and touch our true Purpose. ??
You may want to avoid hearing what you just read or are about to read, and your ego-mind may want to run away from this article. However, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the desire to run away means your soul is screaming to stay and pay attention!
Here is the news: The path to your more profound meaning, your soulful Purpose, is Paved with Pain.
Am I suggesting that you pursue pain? No, I am not a sado-masicist. However, when pain arrives, as it inevitably will, do not run from it; embrace it. To do this, we must go deeper than the mind's rationale. We must commit to discovering our soulful meaning and Purpose because this is the path to love, not in a romantic sense but in a context of "agape" (selfless, universal love).
The bizarre reason why the road purpose is paved with pain is that something extraordinarily happens through the Meaning and Purpose process: the development of emotional maturity.
Often, the only way to make it through trauma and tragedy is with a single lifeline: curiosity.
Let me be crystal clear: We must recognize the difference between an endless negative cycle of victim-affirming questions like, "Why me?" or "Why now?" and genuine curiosity.
We must apply genuine curiosity about the meaning we have automatically given to any event. We must be courageous to embrace questions that will take us on a soulful journey of expanding our consciousness.
Soulful curiosity leads to questions such as:
"If I moved forward in time five years, how might this tragedy seem like a gift?"
"What if this event is a wake-up call to awaken me from something I've been sleepwalking through? What might that be?"??
"What part of this event might be awakening me to something vitally important about why I'm here on the planet? What might that be?" ?
"What part of myself did I hide away that this event can set free for me to see, embrace, and use to fulfill my purpose?"
As you stand at the crossroads of pain and possibility, remember that each moment of suffering carves deeper into your being, shaping you into someone stronger, wiser, and more attuned to the whispers of your true Purpose.
The journey through pain is not about seeking suffering but about embracing the profound transformations it brings.
