What’s an IoT Platform Anyway?

In the tech world, "platform" is a term that's as ubiquitous as it is nebulous. It's slapped onto everything from operating systems to social media sites, diluting its meaning to the point of confusion. A platform, in its essence, is a foundation that supports and empowers users to build, innovate, or engage in activities beyond the platform's original capabilities. For example, a smartphone is a platform; it allows users to run apps that extend the phone’s functionality. But it's also a platform for developers because it allows developers to create new types of apps and services and help distribute them globally.

In the IoT realm the term takes on a more specialized significance. A genuine IoT platform isn't a collection of tools or a basic hardware setup; it's an integrated environment that supports the full lifecycle of IoT development—from device management and data collection to analysis and application deployment. I've even written about how there's multiple types of IoT "clouds" platforms that exist (at least 5!)

At Golioth, we see our platform as more than just a backdrop for IoT projects; it's an ecosystem designed to make IoT development dependable, secure, and sustainable. We purposefully don't try to solve every part of the IoT stack. Instead, we prioritize our mission of simplifying the IoT development experience and delivering what our customers need the most.?Through our capabilities, and those of our partners, developers can come with a vision and leave with a tangible, functioning IoT solution.

I’ve built Golioth-like platforms four times over my career. My vision for this final iteration of Golioth is to have a fully-integrated, ecosystem-driven IoT development platform from idea to production. Today we have an amazing, flexible firmware SDK that simplifies some of the complexities when “connecting sand to the cloud” and a growing set of incredible partnerships. But we’re just getting started. And we have an experienced, mission-driven team dedicated to building the best version of Golioth yet.

There is no simple way to answer, "What is a platform" or "What is an IoT platform" but for us, our customers, and our partners, it’s simplifying the process of building IoT, day in and day out.
