I do not favor investing in Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency that operates without a central bank or single administrator. It enables peer-to-peer transactions via the blockchain, a secure and transparent public ledger.
?Bitcoin has no intrinsic value. See CAP on this matter above. As such, it is my opinion that increases in value are 100% speculative. With no asset underlying Bitcoin, there is nothing to stop Bitcoin from going down in price in the same way it went up.
?My guest on my Successful Funding show on Tuesday will be Mark Maraia, who is a Bitcoin advocate. I am looking forward to Mark sharing his viewpoint on Bitcoin.
?As a matter of reality, lots of people are investing in Bitcoin. Every time a transaction occurs using Bitcoin, more Bitcoins are minted through mining. This action would suggest that inflation would be impacting Bitcoin as, again, there is no underlying value.
?As an additional matter of reality, many people are accepting Bitcoin as an alternative to fiat currency, which is a currency issued by a country. This fact makes Bitcoin a player within the capital industry if for no other reason. I have explored cryptocurrency as an alternative to the use of credit cards and the associated processing fees, high interest rates, and community wealth extraction.
?For all of us who have suffered through high inflation in the last few years, it has everyone looking for better strategies to neutralize this reduction in value. Currencies compete against each other. Everyone engaged in international business must manage payments to avoid a shift in currency exchange rates that can eat up profits.
?My primary concern with Bitcoin is that it appears that all the increases in price are based on speculation. It is difficult to discern how this is different from gambling.
I have had many energetic discussions with entrepreneurs who want to raise funding through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO). I have been told that cryptocurrency has value because one was assigned to it by a small business. I have been told that cryptocurrency will inherently increase in price. I have been told that assigning a price to something with no value makes it a commodity. I have been told that the initial sale or the resale of cryptocurrency is not a sale of a security, and, therefore, it is not subject to government regulations.
?As I read newsletters on cryptocurrency, I am continuously disappointed to see the majority of articles on the topics of fraud, money laundering, and other misdeeds.
?The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has failed to take action, and Congress has not supported the SEC with better legislation. It seems like they are waiting for the train wreck, and then they will step in to clean up the mess.
?Dr. Tom Frey, my guest last week on my Successful Funding show, stated that Japan has stepped up and provided a governance framework that far outshines the United States.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT SHOW
LAST THURSDAY, Don Cohen was our guest on the Community Revitalization show presented by RCI Community Funds and RCI Academy. Stephen Shaff and I acted as co-hosts as we discussed the importance of communications within communities. Not only is it a key asset in building and operating community investment funds, but as a prerequisite, communication serves to inform a community and enable it to have a sense of identity.
