A Bit of Initiative Helps Leon Realise A Lot of Potential

Leon, electrician by trade, studied the WHS Certificate IV course with Harness Energy. He decided to do this course himself; a decision that has resulted in a career opportunity that will enable him to drive some really healthy changes for his company and colleagues. Leon is over 40yrs old and has over 15 years’ experience in the electrical trade having started as an Apprentice in his 20’s. It has been a well-paid job with few days being of the ‘ rinse and repeat’ nature. It is also a high risk trade within the construction industry due to working with solar, low voltage, high voltage and more.?He could have continued doing this indefinitely.?

Leon’s passion for knowledge

However, Leon has a passion for knowledge and has been known to proactively target training in courses such as project management and supervision skills. This passion is part of how Leon recognised his interest in safety and took the initiative to undertake this qualification as a way to open up a career ‘past the tools’.?

Over the years Leon has developed his understanding of himself, the choices he was making and the impact on those around him - the result being not just a desire to achieve a significant change in his personal approach to health, but a recognition of the important role health plays in work safety. Leon says that, in addition to becoming a father and working FIFO, he is now motivated to be in a role which can positively impact the lives of his colleagues.?

The right training

Cert IV in WHS, with the unique electives available through Harness Energy, meant potential career development for Leon. That he took this initiative by himself was not lost on his employer who immediately offered him a promotion as the HSEQ Advisor for the organisation. For Leon it was invaluable on multiple fronts; the course flexibility and delivery methods which, in combination with CSQ funding eligibility, resulted in a fully subsidised course. One that has delivered for himself and can add value for his organisation and the broader industry.

Funding a key enabler?

Had Leon not taken the initiative or been able to access CSQ funding support, he may not have undertaken the course and the promotion would not have happened. Had Leon not nurtured his relationship with his employer, they may never have even known he had taken this initiative.?
