Here’s a quick look at the three main methods of pain management available at our labour rooms:?

1. Entonox Gas: This is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas. While the gas and air will not remove all the pain, it can help reduce it significantly and make it more bearable.

• Easy to use and intake is controlled by the patient
• Can be administered at any stage of labour depending on the patient’s preference
• Takes about 15-20 seconds to work

2. Pethidine Injection: This method involves the injection of a medicine called pethidine into the patient’s thigh or buttock to relieve pain.

• Can help the patient relax
• Takes about 20 minutes to work
• The effects last between 2-4 hours

3. Epidural: An epidural is a type of local anaesthetic. It numbs the nerves that carry the pain impulses from the birth canal to the brain. While this mode of pain relief isn’t readily available at most hospitals, Ninewells provides this facility round the clock.

• Gives 99% pain relief in most cases
• Extremely helpful for long and particularly painful labours
• To be administered only by a licensed anaesthetist
