Birthday Story: The Memento Mori Calendar

When I turned 40, I came across something that shifted my thinking about time, the Memento Mori Calendar—a extraordinary reminder that life is finite. Memento Mori is a Latin phrase meaning "Remember that you must die," and it urges us to live with purpose, fully aware of our limited time. I started counting weekends because those are the moments that belong entirely to me and planning for them in a way that makes me happy. ??
This calendar, with the countdown of weekends left of my youth laid out, reveals exactly how much free time I have left to live on my own terms if I am to work 9-5 until I am 60. If you’re 20, you still have a generous amount, but for me, seeing those numbers was a wake-up call. It forced me to confront how I’ve been spending my time and energy—not to dwell on past regrets, but to approach the future with intention. This visualization made the ancient Stoic practice of Memento Mori resonate in a profound way—not to be morbid, but to stay motivated. ????
Since then, I’ve been more mindful about how I invest my time and energy. It’s not about being busy but being purposeful—whether that’s time with loved ones or quiet moments of reflection. Every week is a chance to dive into the things I like, rest, grow, contribute, and connect with others, art, and nature. ????
As I celebrate another year, I’m reminded to stay present and live consciously. Time is our most precious resource, and I’m committed to using mine wisely, in harmony with the energy I have left. Live intentionally. Every day counts, and happy birthday to me! ????????????
