Birth of Virtual Agents!
Are chat bots really the future?
If you ask Google, what are chat bots- it says, ‘a computer program designed to simulate conversation with human users, especially over the Internet.’ Quite interesting! But how did they come about? Let’s put some limelight on how these virtual agents came about and if there are any real benefits of leveraging them.
It all began in the 1950’s when Alan Turing, a reputed computer scientist and mathematician developed the ‘Imitation Game’ which involved three players namely- A, B and C. While A was a machine, B was a human. And C who was the interrogator entered questions in to the computer as he received responses from A and B. The fun as well as the tricky part was that C had to establish who was human and who the machine amongst A and B. But due to limited databases it never lasted long enough. However, this test is still conducted in some universities till date.
Subsequently, Eliza was born in 1960’s that was an AI development with a purpose to simulate a psychotherapist which again took a turn due to her limited vocabulary. Then in the 1970-1980’s Freddy was developed who was a non-verbal robot, which was successful but with certain limitations. Though, the earliest integration of bots was witnessed in 1970’s in the medicinal sector.
Finally, the 1990’s-2000 saw a revolutionary change as bots became more and more consumer-friendly after some definite developments and vigorous research work. Today, these chat bots are well-known as virtual agents and are being used by enterprises in new and existing ways to make customer experience with the brand even more extraordinary.
‘Gartner predicts that chat bots will power 85 percent of all customer service interactions by the year 2020. Perhaps more impressive (or concerning), it predicts that, by 2020, the average person will have more conversations with chat bots than with their spouse. If you are a consumer-facing business and haven't yet considered chat bots, you may be missing out.’(https://www.inc.comby-2020-youre-more-likely-to-have-a-conversation-with-this-than-with-your-spouse.html)
