The Birth Of A Leader

Something Silly:

?Which came first the Chicken or the Egg?

Something Serious:

How are leaders born?

Think about that and now?read the question again.?

How many times have you heard someone say,?“that person is a natural leader,?it comes from within…” or?something to that effect.

It feels very much like a dramatic scene from a Star Wars movie. (Insert:?“lead you must”)

Well the dictionary states leaders as:

1. Someone responsible for or in control of a group, organization, country, etc
2. A piece of writing in a newspaper in which the editor (= the person in charge of a newspaper) expresses their personal opinion on a subject
3. Someone who conducts a band

Since this didn’t help, I kept digging and found this article which started to make sense:

"Why Leaders are Made not Born."

• Research by psychologists has proved that, in the main, Leaders are ‘mostly made.' The best estimates offered by research is that leadership is about one-third born and two-thirds made.
• The ability to effectively lead, motivate and direct a group of people – whether it is in business, sport, or politics - requires a very complex set of skills, mostly acquired through experiences, self-development as well as access to subsequent training.

To expect a person to be born a fully evolved leader with the ability to influence and direct others doesn't make sense based on what we know about the psychology of leadership and teams.

Leaders can do and be a lot - to a lot of people but that can't be everyone, everywhere in the way others hope for. They must pick and choose (carefully). It's those choices that help evolve a leader into a great position of leadership.

Leaders?are made – by the commitments they make and their ability to follow through on thos choices.

So maybe the question isn't are leaders born or made or but rather:

"How are leaders made to order?" (yes, just like eggs)
