Birth & Beyond:??Support for New Parents in the 4th Trimester featuring Dr. Diane Speier (EP 71)

Having a new baby is an incredibly exciting time for parents, but it can also be overwhelming. The first few months of parenthood are often dubbed the “fourth trimester” and come with a range of emotions such as joy, excitement, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. My guest for this episode, Dr. Diane Speier, has a passion for guiding parents through this time and helping them cope in the post-partum period. She offers valuable advice in her book,?Life After Birth: A Parent’s Holistic Guide for Thriving in the Fourth Trimester.

In her book, Dr. Speier explores how expecting parents can plan and prepare for their little one's arrival while also managing their own expectations of what life will be like after they become parents. She covers topics such as forming a post-partum support system, how to manage stress throughout the fourth trimester, and provides holistic advice on parenting techniques that help create a positive relationship between parent and child from day one.?

Dr. Speier recommends that expecting parents start preparing for the fourth trimester at least six weeks before their due date by assembling their post-partum care team which should include family members, friends, or professionals who have experience caring for babies or have knowledge about post-partum wellness issues. She emphasizes that having support during this time is essential because it allows parents to take breaks when needed and get help when they need it most—such as taking turns with overnight feedings or getting extra rest when feeling overwhelmed and exhausted from caring for their newborn around the clock.?

Having a good plan in place helps reduce stress during this time so expectant parents can focus on more important things such as bonding with their baby while they adjust to life as new parents together! Having an understanding partner who is willing to do his/her part to help out with tasks like cleaning up around the house or shopping for groceries can make all the difference in setting up both mommy and daddy for success in those early days home with their precious bundle of joy!?

Parenthood can be an extremely rewarding journey but it is not without its challenges—especially during those first few months of adjusting to having a newborn around 24/7! Knowing what to expect during this time helps expecting couples prepare mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually so they are ready for anything thrown at them during those first three months after birth—the fourth trimester! Navigating this period doesn't have to be daunting; instead it should be embraced as an opportunity to bond with your newborn while you learn together how best to work together as a family unit.
