Birmingham is on the 'up' and you need to be part of it!

The UK's second city is changing, and it is changing rapidly! Birmingham has always been rather quick at that, from the start of the Industrial revolution, transforming the area into the manufacturing heart of Britain to the rapid adoption of the Mo-town concept and the world famous Spaghetti junction. Nothing happens on a small scale in Birmingham!

Birmingham City Council - the largest local authority in Europe, has to meet the needs of a diverse, multi-ethnic and predominantly young population. On the other hand, the West Midlands Combined Authority, a new player on the block, is able to look towards the strategic cooperation between neighboring authorities, something that has been historically difficult to achieve in the West Midlands. Designers, therefore, have a role to play in helping the transformation of the city and pushing for sustainable urbanism at the heart of public policy!

The Birmingham Architectural Association has done exactly that. With a reformed committee of young and enthusiastic architects from diverse practices all across the city, the BAA is looking towards re-invigorating the design life within the city. The sky is the limit. The Commonwealth Games of 2022, Coventry City of Culture 2020, Birmingham's city regeneration are set to drive a unprecedented change in the skyline and urban environment of the city.

The BAA is already making ripples with the Women in Architecture event organised on the 7th of March and attended by more than seventy people attending. My own practice - BDP, hosted the first #BuildingBrum event of 2018 at the Birmingham Cathedral. The topic was Home, Sweet Home and more than hundred and twenty built environment professionals attended the event.

Birmingham is changing and we, as architects and design professionals, want to drive that change for the better. Help us do that.

Join us on the 28th of March and celebrate our re-start!

Join us throughout 2018 and help us promote architecture in Birmingham!
