Bird Paradise v’s Jurong Bird Park: which one is better?

Bird Paradise v’s Jurong Bird Park: which one is better?

As I love to try out all of our amazing tourist attractions I visited Bird Paradise (BP) with my wife May and while I can see the attraction I can also see that it’s a pale imitation of the old Jurong Bird Park (JBP).

Firstly JBP had over 400 bird species and BP only has 300.

Secondly it appears to have been designed for the instagram generation.

There are far more pretty bird exhibits, very colourful, who are very friendly and very photogenic.

All good for those that love to share on instagram but I loved the birds of prey from the eagles to the kestrels etc at JBP, none of which exist at BP.

It’s as if Mandai got rid of all the nasty dark birds and replaced them with all the pretty tame birds!

Taylor Swift v’s Metallica!

The only aspect which really annoyed me was their continued claims to be sustainable while having air conditioned pods at entry and exit points to all the zones.

Guess where most people congregated?

In these zones which had NO birds in!!

I wanted to scream if you don’t want to come to an outdoor bird park to enjoy the birds in our gorgeous tropical weather then why bother coming? You may as well go to the aquarium where everything is inside in darkness and air con!

It took us 90 minutes to do the entire park!

So again this is for Gen Y/Z/A who have limited attention spans rather than people who want to actually find out about the birds. JBP used to take me half a day to get around.

The amount of visitors, mostly local I have to say, who were wandering around BP with their eyes glued to their phones rather than looking at the birds was staggering!

Why bother coming if all you’re going to do is look at your phones!

The whole concept was fine and everything but I wouldn’t recommend it and I wouldn’t come back. My favourite part was the Wetlands Zone which at least let a myriad of different birds fly around within the giant net protected outdoor zone.

What do you think?

Have you been, what do you think of it?

Hi Chris, Thanks for your article! I loved all the Mandai parks and spent many days there growing up in SG. My photography journey started out photographing the animals there. They all had and still have a special place in my heart. I really miss JBP, and I totally get your criticisms about the new park! JBP felt very homey, BP feels very modern and polished, almost too much so. Still beautiful though, don't get me wrong - through my photography I can anyways spend entire days at these places and never get tired. I'm very passionate about animals, haha.

I had similar feelings when I visited BP shortly after they opened. It is nice, well designed - but it lacks the distinct character of JBP - focus is on creating the ability for a good Insta-shot. Chris J Reed we need to accept that new attractions are not built for Baby Boomers or GenX anymore. The purses of Gen Y, Z & Alpha are what developers increasingly are after.

From Bird Park to Bird Paradise? Moving from Jurong to Mandai Heartbreak for many I gather Birds had their feathers ruffled Literally forced out of their nests! Staff and managers alike did cry It was all so sudden and a bother Decades of history got muddled For our innocent feathered friends The bird park’s days have gone by Once quite spacious and bigger It’s now more compact and huddled Missing a few of our flying citizens Strive to thrive on land, water or sky For the ardent visitor, bird or birder Will it be handled or manhandled From park to becoming a paradise? - Siva Mahendran (17/5/23) - Reflections on a visit to Singapore’s Bird Paradise.

Interesting perspectives Chris J Reed. I haven’t been to BP. My family loved JBP. Will be interesting to see what the family thinks when we do go.
