Bipartisan Bulletin: Playing the Claim Game to Improve Retirement Security

Bipartisan Bulletin: Playing the Claim Game to Improve Retirement Security

Today is my birthday! I'm one year older, which means one year wiser—and one year closer to Social Security eligibility. The age you choose to claim your benefits has a big impact on the total amount you receive over time, but many are unaware of the difference. Thankfully, a bipartisan group of senators is working to make it easier for Americans to understand their Social Security benefits to support retirement security. The Bipartisan Policy Center is proud of our role in this important step to improve a critical program.??

I would like to join BPC Action in commending Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Chris Coons (D-DE) for leading this effort. The bill includes changes to the Social Security Administration’s claiming age terms that would better reflect the corresponding benefits, as well as distribution of benefit statements to workers throughout their career. These bills align with recommendations from BPC’s 2016 Commission on Retirement Security and Personal Savings and our 2020 report, How to Help Americans Claim Social Security at the Right Age.?

As I look forward to many more happy birthdays ahead, I hope that lawmakers will continue to build on this strong bipartisan effort to bolster retirement security for hardworking Americans. I know that BPC and BPC Action will continue to fight for sustainable bipartisan solutions on this and other important issues today and tomorrow.?

Solutions Spotlight: Americans Support High-Skilled Immigration

While the political debate over immigration continues, Americans’ perspectives on the issue continue to shift. A new poll conducted by BPC and Morning Consult reveals new insights into how voters feel about high-skilled immigration. BPC’s Theresa Cardinal Brown shared some key takeaways on LinkedIn:

  1. American voters see high-skilled migration favorably, even more than immigration overall. They especially see it as helpful to the U.S. economy.
  2. A majority of voters think that an 11-year wait for a high-skilled green card is too long. That bodes well for changes that can help reduce that time significantly.
  3. American voters really don't know a lot about how our skill-based immigration system works. But more interestingly, many say they think they know how it works, even if they have no personal experience with it.

Learn more about BPC's efforts to build an?immigration system that aligns with American values, meets the nation's needs, and treats everyone fairly.
