Biophilia

I was asked to write a piece on Biophilia. Let me share my findings with you.
I thought it is the fancy name for what I do.
I found out a man called Wilson wrote a book about it in 1984. Coined the term.
Humans have an innate need to meet with nature. Some sources called it a survival technique.
In the built environment it is applied by introducing indirect and direct nature to spaces.
Examples of direct nature are sunlight, air, water, plants, animals, the weather and natural landscapes. This is why living in the Cape is so sought after. This is also why you should try to blur the lines between your property and the surrounding landscape, providing the landscape is beautiful.
Examples of indirect nature are images of nature, natural shapes and colours and forms as well as natural materials. The pantone colour of the year is that camel colour. The colour palate for gardens moved from the moody dark colours in 2024 to calm greens. I am reminded of old paintings of beautiful landscapes.
People working in environments where these elements are present, have better mental health. Less stress and depression and are more productive.
We whole world is trying to be more sustainable. Or are they really? Anyway. Sustainability is a buzz word. When I did research for my CPD course about the 15 landscaping trends in the world for 2025, sustainability came up again. Biophilic design is also a top trend for 2025.

6 天前One of my personal favourite words - in the built environment. A word I would love to place in the primary school curriculum - for children from as early as Grade 1. It is an absolute fundamental to our human wellbeing, our mental wellness and the spaces we live in. I think of Biophilia as a vibe. A vibe we all need.
