TLL Updates!

Organizing a global summit is no small feat—especially when it's packed with pivotal speakers and aimed at addressing urgent global challenges. The complexity and dynamism of managing such an event can only be likened to navigating through a well-orchestrated chaos, demanding our unwavering attention day in and day out.

We're happy with the progress we've made in such a brief timeframe and deeply appreciative of our speakers who've embraced the critical urgency of our mission. Their understanding and commitment are the backbone of this summit's rapid materialization.

Our journey to this point has been one of careful selection and heartfelt gratitude, as we engage in ongoing discussions with potential speakers while also making the difficult decision to decline others.

THE INTERSECTION OF CLIMATE, AI & HUMANITY
THE INTERSECTION OF CLIMATE, AI & HUMANITY

This isn't due to a lack of merit, but a reflection of our commitment to a meticulously crafted consensus document. Each speaker and participant is chosen for their unique contribution to this collective vision, ensuring that every voice plays a pivotal role.

A recent post of mine on a reflective Saturday night delved deep into the essence of this summit, capturing the spirit of what we believe to be not just an event, but a testament to what's possible when we unite for a cause greater than ourselves.

Our website has seen some exciting developments in line with our commitment to constant evolution, innovation, and creativity. Notably, our FAQ page has transformed into an engaging showcase of innovation, thanks to the creative initiatives of Cristina Gherghisan-Filip and her friend Gina. This page now stands as a testament to the ingenuity and spirit that fuels our actions.

We're also thrilled to unveil a new section on our YouTube channel – Climate Impact. Here, we've curated a selection of videos that highlight the significant strides being made in the realm of climate action. We invite you to explore these inspiring stories, follow our page, and share some love with a thumbs-up.

Biomimicry: Designing the Future with Nature's Wisdom | TLL [20]

Our esteemed guest,?Andrew Howley?is all about nature and biomimicry, or in academia called biomimetics. He has been close to investigation and research on the ground for a long time starting with his almost twelve years history with?National Geographic.

His passion in this field of biomimicry was revealed during our first call, where we were like kids, me sharing the excitement of digging deeper into this wonderful domain, and him exemplifying some of his favorite stories and fascinating facts.

We can learn so much from nature, and today's discussion will be bliss. I'm probably the most excited here. Not to mention we'll get some interesting examples from the world of startups who innovate with biomimicry. The?Biomimicry Institute?has a special department focused on this alone.

Biomimicry: Nature's Blueprint for a Sustainable Future

In our fight against climate change, where can we turn for solutions that are tried, tested, and endlessly clever? The answer lies all around us: nature itself. Biomimicry, the science of learning from and emulating nature's designs, holds the key to addressing some of our planet's biggest environmental challenges.

?

What is Biomimicry?

Think of nature as a master engineer who has spent 3.8 billion years honing and perfecting its creations. Biomimicry is the practice of studying these natural models and strategies – the structure of a leaf, the aerodynamics of a bird's wing, the social network of an ant colony –? and applying them to design sustainable technologies, products, and systems.

Core Principles of Biomimicry

·???????? Nature as a Model: Nature is not just a source of raw materials, but a vast library of sustainable blueprints.

·???????? Nature as a Measure: Natural systems provide a benchmark for what true sustainability looks like.

·???????? Nature as a Mentor: Nature's wisdom can guide us towards solutions that work in harmony with the planet.

Real-World Examples of Biomimicry in Action?

1.????? Wind Turbines Inspired by Whales: The bumpy design of humpback whale fins vastly improves their agility. Biomimicry researchers studied this and applied it to wind turbine blades, resulting in more efficient and quieter turbines: https://www.technologyreview.com/2008/03/06/221447/whale-inspired-wind-turbines/

2.????? Self-Cleaning Surfaces from Lotus Leaves: The lotus leaf has a microscopic surface structure that repels water and dirt, keeping it pristine. Mimicking this "lotus effect" has led to self-cleaning paints and coatings: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352573815300020

3.???? Bullet Trains Inspired by Kingfishers: Japan's famed Shinkansen bullet trains faced noise problems when entering tunnels. Inspired by the kingfisher's streamlined beak, which allows it to dive into water with minimal splash, engineers redesigned the trains for a quieter, more energy-efficient ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVU6YBPaaB8

Quotes to Inspire

"The more our world functions like the natural world, the more likely we are to endure on this home that is ours, but not ours alone." – Janine Benyus, Biomimicry Institute co-founder

Questions to Ponder

·???????? What environmental challenges in your community could be solved with nature-inspired solutions?

·???????? How can you incorporate biomimicry's principles into your daily life or work?

Living Biomimicry

Biomimicry is not just about high-tech gadgets. It's a mindset shift, encouraging us to:

·???????? Observe nature closely: Take walks, study the world around you, and pay attention to nature's genius.

·???????? Ask "How would nature do this?": When facing a problem, imagine how a plant or animal might approach a similar situation.

·???????? Support biomimetic businesses: Choose products and companies that are actively looking to nature for inspiration.

See it in Action!

Want to see how biomimicry can be incorporated into everyday life? Check out this short video by Janine Benyus, a world-renowned expert in biomimicry, where she explores the concept in a simple and engaging way:

The climate crisis is urgent, but nature offers a powerful roadmap towards a regenerative future. Biomimicry gives us the tools to learn from Earth's oldest innovator, creating a world where human solutions blend seamlessly with the natural environment.

Let's make this article go viral! Please share it with your friends, and family, and on social media. Tag environmental organizations and climate change activists. Together, we can spread the word about the incredible potential of biomimicry!

Sadly the whale-inspired wind turbine was never commercialised as there were scaling issues. The train is debatable as well. There is no mention in the early work around a kingfisher in either the Japanese or English research. Biomimicry isn't an automatic to sustainability. That's the overpromise of biomimicry as a brand. You need to look at how evolutionary biology is reversed engineering to our technical solutions. The biomimicry as a brand crowd bases its work on a popular kid's science book, not on peer-reviewed academic papers highlighting what is current in evolutionary biology and ecology. There are no rules in nature, only exceptions. So follow the scientific evidence and learn to read directly from the source.
