The biological terrain was first described in the 19th century by French physiologist Dr. Claude Bernard. He proposed that most disease is due to imbalances in the body’s interstitial cellular environment, which he referred to as the “Milieu Intérior” or Biological Terrain. He stated that disease develops when:
“There is a disturbance in the body’s internal cellular environment, which affects the integrity of the body’s cells”.
This, in turn, compromises the body’s ability to maintain health and resist disease.”
Since the body comprises mostly water, the terrain of the body is in essence an aqueous medium. This includes the blood, lymph and the fluids inside of and between the cells.?
The terrain bathes the one hundred trillion cells in the human body and provides a
nutrient-filled fluid matrix that allows essential nutrients to flow into the cells and waste products to flow out of the cells.?
This balanced exchange enables the cells to thrive, grow, reproduce, resist microbes and disease and experience longevity.
“In essence, a cell living in a healthy terrain will thrive”
