Biological oxygen demand (BOD) value is a measurement of the amount of Dissolved Oxygen is used by aerobic microorganisms while decomposing organic matter in wastewater. For design of wastewater treatment plant, BOD to COD ratio should be evaluated for proper selection of treatment units. If ratio is >0.4, wastewater is easily degradable through biological treatment; if ratio is <0.2, it is hard to degraded.
BOD can be measured in real-time with a BOD analyzers to improve wastewater process control and plant efficiency. For online BOD monitoring a TOC analyzer can be used. The relationship between TOC analyzer and BOD for respective BOD value is set in the analyzer.
