Programs in the BioHive

Buzzing in the BioHive - HealthTech Hub Launch, WITS Mentorship Night, and Utah Tech Student Chapter Soft Launch.

It’s been a busy few weeks in the BioHive!

On March 7th, the BioHive Women in Tech and Science chapter hosted an International Women’s Day mentorship event with the Women of Recursion ERG. ?Attendees heard insights from Michaela Hatch on how to find and foster a mentorship relationship. We then had 17 incredible mentors (pictured) spend 2 hours in small mentorship groups with 60 women from the life sciences industry. It was a great example of how even a short conversation with a leader can spur new ideas, growth, and career development.

On March 13th, we launched the HealthTech Hub. The goal of the HealthTech Hub chapter, formerly BioBytes, is to catalyze precision medicine innovation and disrupt the healthcare system, resulting in personalized preventative care, more effective treatments, improved patient outcomes and reduced healthcare disparities.

On March 19th, we soft-launched the Utah Tech University Student Chapter with their Department of Biotechnology.

Thank you to everyone who participated in these community efforts!

BioHive BYU Student Chapter #BioHiveExplores Day 2024

On the first Friday in March, BioHive's BYU Student Chapter and Brigham Young University students joined us in Salt Lake for a BioHive Explores Industry Tour Day. Students visited BD, Recursion, and Seek Labs for comprehensive tours and learning sessions with employees.

They spent the afternoon hearing from ARUP Laboratories’ Lisa Carricaburu, Checkerspot's Kevin Kinghorn, and Altitude Lab's Kapil K. Sharma about the diverse life sciences industry opportunities available to them after graduation.

Days like this are vital to students preparing to enter the hashtag#biotech workforce, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day possible and to all the amazing companies who opened their doors to these amazing students. #GoCougs

Research

The BioHive team had a chance to catch up with the folks at Wasatch BioLabs in Heber, Utah and learn about the great work they are doing in the diagnostics field.

Wasatch BioLabs is a research and development and Oxford Nanopore Technologies certified laboratory specializing in high-throughput sequencing and methylation analysis. They pride themselves on being an innovative R&D lab that utilizes cutting-edge technologies, including Nanopore technology, to provide a comprehensive range of sequencing services to researchers and clinicians.

Oxford Nanopore Technologies offers a unique capability in real-time analysis of native DNA and RNA, regardless of their length. Through their collaboration with Nanopore, Wasatch BioLabs can identify various genetic variations such as copy number, structural variations, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and INDEL variants, as well as methylation and hydroxymethylation base modifications in a single sequencing run.
