Bioeconomy and the Art of Upcycling

Bioeconomy and the Art of Upcycling

Jens, what inspired your company's shift from coal trading to recycling and sustainable material flows?

Inspired by my family legacy, I saw an opportunity to combine our trading expertise with environmental concerns, especially after the Kyoto Protocol emphasized the need for eco-friendly practices. This drove me to focus on underappreciated by-products and transform them into valuable materials. Today, our work emphasizes "bioeconomy" principles - preserving resources and creating economic value from by-products.

Your company is known as "Raw Material Scouts." How do you identify and repurpose by-products across industries?

We start by analyzing each project's needs and then match them with our material database. If necessary, we conduct "truffle hunts," visiting potential suppliers to assess materials firsthand. This hands-on approach builds trust, which, along with our dedication to understanding client needs, forms the foundation of our success in the circular economy.

What are the main challenges in moving industries toward bio-based and circular resource use?

Many industries are comfortable in their routines, so we invest time in building trust and presenting viable alternatives. Regulatory alignment is another issue, as waste should become valuable again, yet policies often lag behind. Lack of knowledge on material separation also limits recyclability, so we advise clients early on to maximize future savings and sustainability.

Can you share an example of a breakthrough achieved through collaboration?

Over ten years ago, we partnered on a project to produce phosphate fertilizer from sewage sludge ash. Working with a dedicated engineer, we helped streamline raw material supply, gain environmental approvals, and establish market standards for this innovative fertilizer. We learned the importance of motivation, patience, and collaboration—success depends not only on expertise but also on strong partnerships and persistence.

How do you tailor your services for various industries and ensure lasting client relationships?

Our approach is based on shared values and attentive listening. Success relies on understanding each side’s needs, including regional customs and regulations, to create sustainable material flows. Trust forms the backbone of these partnerships, fostering cooperation and long-term satisfaction for both parties.

What is your vision for Otto A. Müller Recycling GmbH over the next 10–20 years? How do you stay competitive with advancing technology?

Our curiosity keeps us moving forward. Engaging with partners helps us stay ahead of trends, and we adapt quickly to new "bioeconomy" demands. As technology progresses, we remain active problem-solvers for industries, policy makers, and future generations, aiming to keep our practices both relevant and innovative.

Thank you Jens, Jan and Antonia for taking the time to share your insights and experiences with us.?
