Biodomes: Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Living

Biodomes: Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Living

Increasing global urbanization poses an ever greater challenge to food production. Cities are getting bigger, agricultural land ever scarcer, and costs ever higher. The solution could be to bring food production inside the city, but how? That's where the biodome comes into play.

In this article, we will explore the benefits of biodomes, as well as their design and social value.

The biodome is an architectural structure that allows you to create a controlled microclimate for the cultivation of plants and the conservation of animal species within a transparent structure. The biodome can be designed in such a way as to replicate the natural environment of different climatic zones, allowing exotic fruits, vegetables and plants to be grown in places where it would not be possible in the traditional way. Furthermore, the biodome can host the reproduction of animal species, favoring the conservation of biodiversity.

But what are the concrete advantages of the biodome in urban food production? Here are some examples:

Better crop yield: the biodome allows you to create an ideal environment for plant growth, with controlled temperature, humidity and sunlight. This allows you to obtain a higher yield than traditional cultivation, while reducing the risk of losses due to disease or adverse weather conditions.

Local and sustainable food production: thanks to the biodome, it is possible to grow fruit and vegetables within the city, reducing the dependence on producers outside the city centre. Furthermore, cultivation inside the biodome requires less water and fewer pesticides than traditional cultivation, making food production more sustainable and with a low environmental impact.

Greater freshness of products: cultivation inside the biodome allows you to produce fresh fruit and vegetables all year round, without being influenced by the seasons or the external climate. Furthermore, the proximity to the city guarantees a faster and less expensive distribution of the products.

Sustainability awareness: the biodome can become a meeting and educational place on environmental sustainability, promoting the dissemination of good practices and awareness of the need for sustainable food production.

Biodome design is a complex operation that requires attention to many details. First of all, it is necessary to establish the position where the structure will be erected, taking into consideration factors such as the availability of space, the proximity to places of consumption, the availability of resources such as water and electricity. Furthermore, the design of the biodome must also take into consideration the safety of the structure, the quality of the materials used and the ability to resist bad weather and climate change.

The biodome can be inserted in urban contexts in different ways, depending on the needs of the local community. It can be an integral part of a public park, providing an opportunity for community gardening and environmental education. Alternatively, the biodome can be placed within a farm or a university campus, as a tool for scientific research and the training of future farmers.

But the biodome doesn't just offer benefits in terms of sustainable food production. Being a transparent structure, the biodome can become a place for meeting and raising awareness on environmental sustainability. Its presence within the city can represent a point of reference for local communities, which can take part in environmental education initiatives, cultural and entertainment events.

Furthermore, the biodome can offer employment opportunities for people from the local community, who can engage in the cultivation and maintenance of the facility. This not only fosters local employment, but also contributes to building a sustainable and supportive community, where people are involved in food production and environmental protection.

For this reason, the biodome can be an attractive option for cities wishing to promote sustainable development and local food production. However, to achieve these goals, it is important to actively involve the local community from the outset. Only in this way can a structure be created that responds to the needs of the community and is successful in the long term.

So, if you're interested in supporting sustainable food production and environmental stewardship, we invite you to join the discussion about how the biodome could be used in your community. Leave a comment below with your ideas and suggestions, and let's raise awareness about sustainability and local food production together.

Biodomes are quite indeed a futuristic aesthetic, and yet it's an old and still good idea. However I got a question: how would temperature and moist parameters would be designed ? If it uses gas based energies, the point is missed. Does passive biodomes building exists ? Using the same architectural and structural principles as Passive Houses? Thanks for sharing your thoughts !
