A Look at Binghamton's History
Binghamton was founded in the early 1800s, and was initially known as “Chenango Point”. It was ultimately named after Philadelphia native William Bingham, who was a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress, and a major land speculator. The town grew quickly because of its riverside location, and quickly became an important center for commerce and trade. Today it remains a diverse and thriving city with plenty of opportunities and much to see and do for all who call it home.

PFLAG Binghamton is the city’s local chapter of the national PFLAG organization. PFLAG is the largest grassroots organization of its kind in the country and has 500 chapters with more than 200,000 members in the United States. PFLAG plays a critical role in providing advocacy, support, and resources to the LGBTQ community, and offers monthly support meetings, as well as resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities for the LGBTQ community, friends, and allies.
The Binghamton Pride Coalition is a pillar of the LGBTQ community in Binghamton. Throughout the year, the group works to plan events, provide resources, and celebrate and support Binghamton’s LGBTQ community in every way possible. It’s truly a great place to get connected and become involved.
