Working on Revit offers us to work on following work environments
- ?Project Environment
- Family Editor Environment
- Conceptual Massing Environment (CME)
- In-place Environment
?Project Environment
This is a default and common environment in which we have specific ribbon for each discipline such as architecture tab, structure tab, system tab and so on.
Family Editor environment
In this discipline specific tabs will be replaced by single create tab. Create tab can vary depending upon which specific family editor template we’re in. Such as
Model families : 3D family
Detail and annotation family : 2D family
Profile family : 2D shape and modeling
Conceptual Massing Environment (CME)
Conceptual Massing Environment is 3D only environment. We start by creating a sketch and then create a form. CME gives access to whole bunch of specialized tools. Some of this allow for more advanced free form modeling and more advanced relationship between various elements and so on.?

Depending on category that is assigned to the file there are two types of conceptual massing environment
1)?Mass
2)?Generic (other category)
Massing in Revit is conceptual thing. Its almost like temporary category. So the concept behind massing is that you use this as a sort of virtual clay model.?So just like you could take a lump of clay and shape it as you want. So we create free form study model in Revit and then we would move that forward into a?project and actually replace that study model with actually geometry such as walls, floor, roof etc. Using Project environment.
That's the workflow which is intended by massing category. But that's the only use of massing category in Revit. It's not possible to use it in other way. It is critical to create door window and such category correctly using massing.
In-place Environment
This is used very sparingly but the concept is quite simple. When we want to keep the context of the project in view while you work and you want to build some custom 3D model directly in place where it's needs to go.
We can do it by following ways:
- ?Traditional families?
2. ?Massing families
We can recognize that we are in in-place environment by looking at the block saying "In-Place Editor as shown."
Time to time we're required to work on different environments as listed above. Hope this article would help anyone who's new to BIM and Revit.
