BIM in Germany... As a reform?

Over the last couple of years BIM has been receiving more and more recognition as a major improvement of the construction industry in Europe. Consequently, in 2015 we saw that Germany was one of the countries closely following the UK in BIM leadership.

Is BIM in Germany going to establish German-made as a synonym to good quality in the construction industry? Well, for us the answer is YES!

Seeing BIM as an extension of the mature processes of using geospatial data already taking place in German construction, German officials were fast to see the benefits of collaborative approach to managing data at all the stages of construction. BIM was recognized as a solution to the ever-increasing costs of planning and construction brought by persistent disputes and miscommunication along the value chain. Fact is, German authorities have been observing a decline in the profitability of the construction market in the last decade and the issue of process innovation has been on the table for quite a while.

without funding and Propaganda from official structures, it will take ages for Germany and so many other EU countries to be really BIM efficient AND true world market Players... its not only a Billion financial loss, but also a Status, esteem and much, much more... if a neighbour builds a building, faster, cheaper, and better then you, ecology not to mention, then you. youve got to ask yourself one question "am i feeling lucky" ? but a serious and up to now very respectfull, even great, construction industry should not be left to luck ! or... have a look for your self.... https://stellenanzeige.monster.de/getjob.aspx?JobID=189209188&LogGetJobChannelID=6894&WT.mc_n=olm_sk_disprt_criteo_0_de_Engineering best, v

well, as i stated! i dont mind if a 5 member Office is looking for a CAD Person, but when the big DB ( Deutsche Bundesbahn ) announces that it is looking for a CAD draftsman !!! no mention of BIM ! then it says it all ! we are still in the dark CAD ages here in central Europe...( yes, Micro Station, gets mentioned, but guess who will get the Job! ) so bye, bye BIM i guess in this case, like so many others... BIM is just not getting through, still. despite all the individuall effort of many great german BIM pioneers and Offices that have converted to BIM! and who are doing the best that they can.

I fully agree with the both previous comments. Being a member of the working groups for the German BIM standard VDI 2552 I can say that we do not lack expertise or understanding in Germany. But unlike in the UK, we unfortunately do not see any state-driven efforts to shape out equal market conditions for all stakeholders. BIM mandates, i.e. regulations and processes for building permits, state-funded training programs for SMEs would significantly trigger the adoption of BIM in Germany. The BIM-agnostic German Fee regulation for Architects and Engineers (HOAI) does actually show the current mindset. Public administration and also huge interest groups, i.e. associations of architects, engineers or the construction industry, seem to follow a common pattern: avoid the impression of inactivity by establishing discussion groups. A great field for disruption, the predator, however, is yet to come...

As a builder, being dependent on the services of design and construction teams, I have to say that most of the german suppliers are not working with BIM. The market is at the beginning of digitalization and still questioning if BIM is really the future. Therefore we published our Siemens Real Estate BIM Standard https://www.realestate.siemens.com/hq/downloads/bim.pdf

I agree only conditionally. It is not Germany that is progressive, but rather the architects and engineers involved, who seem to have learned from projects in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Berlin that things cannot go on like this. However, assuming that Germany has a leading role for this reason is a little far-fetched. For example, Germany is lagging massively behind in terms of broadband expansion, there are few training courses offered at universities on BIM, BIM is not an integral part of architectural education and so on. A digital step-by-step plan, which also contains some statements that make it very easy to point to others when things don't work out, is very critical in my point of view. Where are the norms, the working aids, the phase- and cross-company consensus, where are the training opportunities and the legal framework conditions?
