BIM, does it have a future?

As January 2019 arrived, the growth of digital within the global construction and property sectors show no signs of slowing. With the new BIM ISO standards integration imminent, property owners and the AEC needs to adapt and move into the next chapter of industry evolution.

I am personally involved in 2 businesses working on different missions within the construction and property sector, which gives me a unique view on both sides of the fence.

  1. THE D, a consultancy focusing on digital business transformation and project delivery within the AEC and asset management sector.
  2. RE-EVOLOGY, a proptech consultancy creating new digital business tools for the property and real estate sector. Focusing on new Digital Realities.

I plan to give my unfiltered opinion on the future world for our industries and how I recommend we get there.

Future of BIM Presentation

I have been presenting to clients of THE D a vital presentation "THE FUTURE OF BIM" to prepare them for the next 12 months, with a mindful eye on the next five years (impossible to look to far ahead these days).

Without going into the full 2-hour presentation, I wanted to share the headlines.

Summary Of Presentation

The key message was as follows,

BIM has been evolving and maturing over the past ten years, and as a result, the AEC has been progressing positively.

As the construction industry goes through their much-needed transformation, it's important to take a look at what is happening outside the industry".

"The economies and societies of our countries are changing at the speed of light, in fact, at speed never seen before" Due to many factors which I may talk about in another article.

Emerging Tech 2019

In 2019 we are expecting some major emerging technologies to break the surface in 2019/2020 such as Blockchain, AI, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, IOT Integration, Digital Twin, Robotic workforce.

All of the topics above have been known about for a good few years now, but there are clear signs they are coming to disrupt the patterns on how we live our lives and how we do business in the not so distant future.

Questioning how we live our lives is a logical self-evolution, which is a great thing, but my call to action is that the construction and property sector is aware that outside of their sector evolution are some of the most significant changes ever seen and it will affect every person and every business.

The BIM of the Future

I had first introduced to BIM in the north east of England 13 years ago when I was asked to deliver a project for a healthcare client using Revit and Navisworks.

The changes within the last 13 years have been unbelievable.

The BIM buzz has been electric to get us here today, but my honest opinion is that BIM will soon complete its transformation and turn from a caterpillar into a butterfly.

Data is the future of our world and BIM is going to be the stepping stone into the next life of our buildings.

BIM is here to stay but what I mean is that the data within our industries will carry EVEN MORE VALUE and it will be crucial to our world that our buildings run as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Will the word BIM be with us forever? Maybe not, but our good old friend BIM is transforming into something we cannot even fathom at the moment.

The world is changing into something exciting, agile, unpredictable, constant change, constant innovation, quicker delivery, better quality, reduced time, fewer people required.

What an exciting time for the industry but extremely challenging time for the humans who are part of the industry. The only thing we know as constant is change.

Which is why mastering how we live in a world of constant change is a very important to us.

THE D

I recently re-launched the business I co-founded 36 months ago with a new mission and with an apparent problem that I wanted to fix.

To prepare companies and individuals in the property and construction sector for Industry 4.0.

Creating long term business relationships with clients who want to thrive in the future and to adapt into alongside our industry digital transformation, unlocking more value and bigger profit from their project activities using new a new mindset, new tools, new methodologies, new roles, new ways of working, a new language etc. BIM didn't bring the big profits maybe expected to businesses, but most companies implemented BIM with a traditional mindset.

THE D is an evolved BIM consultancy with a full understating of the past, delivering in the present and with a clear ambitious vision on the future.

I will introduce THE D in further detail in a future article.

Anyone who wants to know more about our presentation on the FUTURE OF BIM or wants to have a chat about any of the points above, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Cheers

"BIM didn't bring the big profits maybe expected to businesses, but most companies implemented BIM with a traditional mindset." I agree but that is happened since there is a need for a buffer in this change, leaders are usually not young.
