BIM-Brexit-Technology
Over my last 30 years of working with the construction industry the time has come for this very conservative industry to be pushed into the 21st century.
New technology is never an easy thing to adopt especially when a large proportion of the older generation do not fully understand what the benefits will really be!!
The one thing I can say that many other industries (like Banking/Retail etc.) have gone through the pain barriers and now reap the benefits of being more streamlined, efficient, pro-active, etc. etc. in how they work and provide value for money for their customers.
In some of my other articles I talked about the lack of BIM adoption (PAS 1192-2 2013) but I am glad to report that many of the larger contractors and professional service providers have now made the transition to BIM. They also in turn are putting the tier 2 providers under a lot of pressure to become fully BIM compliant as well. A number of our customers are being asked to fill in questionnaires of how they as a company are making this BIM transition.
The clear message from all of this is that the tier 2 companies that do not invest in their people and their current technology will be out of touch in a big way over the next 5 years.
We at Sherlayer have developed a CDE Environment for BIM that can be used by all staff with very little or no training. This was one of our key objectives because unless all stake holders collaborate the whole essence of BIM falls apart.
The word ‘collaboration’ is easily spoken but very hard to achieve, we at Sherlayer believe we have hit the right balance between simplicity of use and access to complex data.
My title above also included Brexit, how does this affect our industry?
Change always brings with it a feeling of apprehension around the unknown, but with thee unknown also brings new opportunities for those who embrace change.
My view is the UK Government has given great direction and leadership in steering the construction industry towards BIM. This can only do one thing and that is make us more competitive.
These changes will allow all companies of all sizes to use technology along with more highly skilled staff to be world leaders in this field.
I would welcome all views and comments and if anyone should wish to view what we have done I can send links to YouTube videos or provide a one to one WebEx.
