Billy BadAss--Little Bill the Same Soul

Billy BadAss--Little Bill the Same Soul

As I sit down tonight, the thump of Isaac Hayes' Shaft beat surges through the air, filling the space around me with the anticipation of something bold, something undeniable. That iconic sound transports me, igniting the mental image of Billy BadAss—a man unshaken by doubt, staring down life’s obstacles like they’re mere stepping stones on the path to greatness.

Billy BadAss is that part of me that feels untouchable. The warrior who’s taken every scar, every setback, and turned them into lessons. He’s the version of me who shrugs off limits, standing tall when people try to box him in. You say I can’t do it? Billy BadAss says, "Watch me." He’s confidence personified, integrity embodied, a force of resilience that doesn’t just walk through fire—he thrives in it. Obstacles? Merely opportunities in disguise. Billy BadAss doesn’t need permission to be great because he knows who he is. He is self-defined.

But here’s the thing. Sitting right alongside that titan of confidence, there’s another part of me—Little Billy. That eight-year-old boy who remembers what it was like to be told he was less, to feel like an outsider in his own life. Little Billy, who heard his father say he’d never be a real man, that he was too soft, too sensitive. Those words, at that age, cut deep. They echo, even as the years stretch far beyond those moments.

When Little Billy’s father passed, the weight didn’t lift—it pressed harder. His mother, overwhelmed with her own battles, added to the chorus of pain. At 16, he left home, not by choice, but by necessity. His journey wasn’t easy, and at times, it felt like it was him against the world. But that’s where the magic happens. It’s in that crucible of pain where Billy BadAss was forged, standing guard to protect the heart of Little Billy.

And here’s the truth: one cannot exist without the other.

Billy BadAss isn’t just a shield. He’s a protector. He’s the manifestation of strength that Little Billy needed all along. Little Billy, with all his wounds, doesn’t just cower in the corner—he grounds Billy BadAss. He reminds him of compassion, of empathy, of understanding what it’s like to feel discarded, overlooked, misunderstood. While Billy BadAss takes no shit, Little Billy ensures I never forget the weight of someone’s struggles. That’s the duality, the beautiful tension that makes me who I am.

There are moments when Little Billy’s scars sting, moments when those old doubts creep back in. Life has a way of triggering those hidden wounds when we least expect it. But here’s where the magic happens—every time that doubt rises, it’s Little Billy’s whisper that turns into a roar, that reminds me of the truth: Remember who you are. It’s more than a phrase. It’s a mantra, a lifeline. From a whisper to a song to a shout, Billy BadAss steps forward, tall, bold, unaffected, and proclaims with unshakable confidence:

"My name is William Rochelle, but you can call me Bill."

This isn’t just a story about resilience. It’s about the duality within all of us. We are not simply strong or weak, confident or insecure. We are a blend of both. We are the sum of every wound and every triumph. We are Little Billy and Billy BadAss, and that makes us whole.

So, this article? It’s not about ego. It’s not about showcasing what I’ve done or where I’ve been. It’s a love letter to the child in me who survived despite the odds, to the man who stands tall because of that child, and to everyone who’s ever doubted themselves. It’s a reminder that we all have a Little Billy inside us, a part that carries our hurts and our hopes. But we also have a Billy BadAss ready to take the world by storm.

We don’t have to choose between the two. The power comes in embracing both—the softness and the strength, the vulnerability and the resilience. When we let them coexist, that’s when we’re unstoppable.

So, if there’s anything I want you to take from this, it’s this: no matter what the world says, no matter the scars you carry, you define who you are. You are not what others say—you are the story you write, the choices you make, the love you give. You are the whisper that becomes a roar. And if they don’t like your flavor? That’s their problem.

This is a story about resilience, about duality, and about owning every part of yourself—Billy BadAss and Little Billy alike.

Thanks for reading,

William Rochelle, but you can call me Bill

This is pretty much of shadow work; integrating all the parts of ourselves. The duality of light and dark that exists within all of us. My ‘Badass Billy’ is ‘Cool Dani.’ That’s my ego side of me; the bigger than life me that says ‘I’ve got this’ when Little Me is scared. A friend of mine actually gave me the moniker back when I was getting my divorce. Cool Dani has pushed Little Dani to victory more times than I can count.

William this is so good and so true. WE can't be one without the other. I know that I have similar dualities in myself. I didn't really know how to articulate them, here you did it beautifully. Masterfully written.
