Bills would require Financial Literacy course for High School graduation
Matt MacWilliams, CFP?
Helping business owners and high net worth families in transition grow and protect assets they can't outlive.
HB 1182 by Rep. Vikki Goodwin (D-Austin) and SB 686 by Sen. Carol Alvarado (D-Houston) would require a half-credit financial literacy course for graduation from high school. Currently, financial literacy courses are electives.
As a CFP?, I see a great need for basic financial education for young Texans. I have seen my children go through public schools and graduate without education on even the basics of personal finance. A general understanding of banking, income tax, student loans, insurance, and investments could help lots of young people from making expensive financial mistakes.
We have all heard the stories of crippling credit card or student loan debt, budget woes, mortgage foreclosures due to medical bills, and maybe worst of all, not saving enough for retirement. Most of these scenarios are avoidable with a little education and planning.
I support these bills and hope they help equip our young people with more knowledge about these important financial decisions. Knowledge is Power!
