Comments from Live Meeting conversations in August

For me a coaching mindset shifts the emphasis of the teacher from speaking, transmitting, explaining TO listening, understanding and connecting with the student. One student at a time. It's an opportunity to create a connection with a student, and a class, of value, trust, safety, honesty and high expectations. Many teachers do this (or want to do this) so naturally when they lead with questions. When they can, the individual and collective flourishing is an experience to savour!

Embracing a coaching mindset would let me take the backstage, as & well as encouraging other peers in their discovery learning. It would reshape me as a life coach to see children taking responsibility for their learning and working on their critical thinking, communication, creativity, and many more skills.

For me, the balance is the dance from standing up at the front of the room drawing mathematical symbols and diagrams on the white board, moving to the middle of the room to kneel beside a student who's struggling with issues from home, to have a few quiet words of support and gentle inquiry. Dancing that dance is the normal part of my teaching day, sharing my love for the subject and caring for my students whilst they are in my care. That is what the balance of teaching and coaching is all about.

Teachers who Coach Strategic Support Group

In this group, when we speak, we do so to hear, to put our thoughts and feelings into words, to understand ourselves and believe in ourselves. We speak quietly and listen to understand what is really important to us, to uncover what we truly believe in, and maybe to find a solution to a problem; and then take action. Problems and challenges are keys and doors to deeper understanding of who we are, why we are here and what we are doing with our work and our lives. We welcome them. We use them to learn and grow.

I will be on holidays, however, I look forward to joining the next one. My education degree was in "Learning Management" and we were taught to see ourselves as 'facilitators of learning' rather than teachers and the keepers of all knowledge. ??
