Too many brands make the same mistake over and over:?They try to retell the same old story over and over.?

It’s why we hate sequels: most try to leverage and repeat the old story (packaged differently with no difference after we open and unpack it) merely to cash in on it.

Top Gun Maverick didn’t do that.?

What it chose to do instead was what any good sequel does:

Tell the NEXT chapter and avoid being a mere regurgitation of what's already been told.

Here's the point in 60 seconds:

When it Comes to Sales, Storytelling, and Business, Regurgitation Is an Admission: "We Have Nothing New To Say"

Businesses forget this distinction and keep unleashing the same old story and yet somehow expect a new wave of enthusiasm.

Even Apple, known for its innovation, had a period when it was simply releasing annual iterations for a number of years and customers noticed it. And then Apple took the reigns of its trajectory as a company and started to make products again that showed us "what was next."

Here is the billion-dollar lesson Top Gun Maverick taught me in 3 simple steps:

  1. Never go on auto-pilot when it comes to storytelling and branding.
  2. Know when it's time to introduce the next chapter.
  3. Then introduce it.

This may be why it took 36 years for the sequel.

And why it was worth the wait.
