OTHERWORLDLY: While on the red carpet of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) interviewing Michael Abels for his work on the soon to be released period biopic “Chevalier,” the USC grad who has been Jordan Peele’s go-to composer (“Get Out,” “Us,” “Nope”) gave Tasty Clips a narrative preview of the LA Opera’s presentation of “Omar,” running Oct. 22 – Nov. 13 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

“It tells the story of Omar ibn Said who was kidnapped in Senegal enslaved brought through the Middle Passage to the Carolinas in 1807,” said Abels about the opera he co-wrote with Grammy winner Rhiannon Giddens.

“He could read and write Arabic, and this was to his captors quite an interesting thing that he could do. They tried to convert him to Christianity, and they got him to write his life story. An autobiography which is now in the Library of Congress because it’s one of the first-person narratives of an enslaved person ever.”

“What people didn’t realize is that he never really converted to Christianity. It’s hidden in his autobiography. So, if you’re someone who knows the Quran, you realize that he never converts.?I promise anyone, who doesn’t even like opera or know anything about it, will enjoy it.”

Abels is next working with “Bad Education” director Cory Finley on a film called “Landscape with Invisible Hand” which he describes as “a very interesting piece that also involves aliens but in a totally different way.” It stars Tiffany Haddish, William Jackson Harper (“Love Life“), Clifton Collins Jr. (“Westworld“) and Asante Blackk (“When They See Us”). ?

TASTY QUIP: “I’m still here. It is trying to do the best you possibly can to take care of your better self.?I’ve been fortunate to have some good people around me. I have my moments of backsliding. I’m an avid cigar smoker and I remember Sidney P[oitier] saying, ‘Why would you do that to your body?’?But there are some things that you enjoy that you can’t give up. I have no answers. I’ve just been an incredibly fortunate person. A lot of the people that I’ve come along with were health fanatics, I could go down the list … and I’m still standing.” – RICHARD ROUNDTREE, co-star of OWN's “Cherish The Day,” on turning 80 to Tasty Clips at TIFF??
