Bike 4 Hope: On a mission for ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’

In this interview, Carmen Rousseeuw , one of the founding members of FirstWave, tells us about her experiences with Kom op tegen Kanker (vzw) . Let’s dive in!?

Carmen, you are very motivated in your involvement with ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’ and I understand that this has been a family effort for several years now. Can you give us some background on your ongoing participation and family commitment to this cause??

"My motivation is personal. When my brother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, it was a turning point for our family. We joined forces and formed a team called Bike4Hope. The idea was initiated by my aunt Els Blaton , who is also his partner. She came up with the idea of participating in the "Come on Against Cancer" events and we all participated. Our goal was twofold: to show support for him and to be on the side of everyone fighting this disease."?

Can you explain a bit more about how the cycling event works??

“’Well, 'Kom op tegen Kanker’ isn't just a cycling event, it's a series of activities throughout the year aimed at raising funds. Our family hosted a pancake sale with guided city tour, a spaghetti night and other fundraising activities to support the cause. But the main highlight for us is the 1000km for ‘Kom op tegen Kanker', a four-day cycling event. With groups riding together supported by professional cyclists who ensure the peloton maintains pace and morale."??

And in what ways has your support for ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’ changed or affected you personally??

“Supporting 'Kom op tegen Kanker' has deeply affected me." Carmen says as she explains how it has impacted her life, "It’s given me a greater understanding of the challenges people with cancer face and the emotional toll it takes on families. Being involved adds meaning to my life, knowing I am contributing to a cause that touches so many. It's also brought my family closer as we come together for fundraising activities, supporting one another and the larger community.”?

How do you hope your participation in ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’ will inspire or perhaps influence others??

“I hope that by sharing my experience I can inspire others to join or support the cause in their own way. The interest and curiosity of the community is amazing. Whenever I discuss my involvement, it triggers conversations between people around me about how they can contribute or are already inspired to participate, whether through volunteering or donations. By raising awareness and motivating others to get involved, we are creating a supportive community that can really make a meaningful difference."??

How would you like to see companies get more involved with initiatives like ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’??

“Companies can play a crucial role in supporting their employees and the causes they care about." Carmen explains, "For example, they can support the participation of thier staff in charity events. FirstWave has been incredibly supportive, showing genuine interest in the causes their employees are involved in. They understand that everyone's situation is unique and provide the flexibility to balance work with these important commitments. This kind of support means a lot and encourages others to engage in meaningful initiatives.”

From your perspective, what are the key benefits of participating in ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’???

"For me, participating in ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’ brings a sense of purpose and community. It’s empowering to know that our efforts contribute to cancer research and patient support. The events themselves offer a supportive environment where participants can connect, share stories, and draw strength from one another. It's also an excellent way to stay physically active while promoting a cause that affects so many people."

How can individuals strike a balance between personal commitments and supporting causes like ‘Kom op tegen Kanker’???

"Finding balance can be challenging, but it is possible with the right support. The key for me is to recognize that life moves quickly and it's crucial to make time for things that are important. It's important not to spend too long worrying about all but getting on with your life.? Being involved in charity work brings people together and strengthens bonds, whether it's organizing fundraising events or participating in this cycling challenge. This bond helps us all maintain a healthy balance between personal and professional commitments."??
