Biggest takeaways from the Work on Climate meetup - Tacoma edition - 5/24/23

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

- Margaret Mead

The old Tacoma.

Tacoma has a decades long reputation of being stinky with toxic air.

Bruce Springsteen had a nauseating experience - where he?famously dipped out of town?early during his 1985 tour.

The cleaner more optimistic Tacoma.

In 2021 the Puyallup region got "woke" and put up an?indigenous led climate fight?against Puget Sound Energy's liquified natural gas (LNG) project.

They lost against the Tacoma City Council and the State Pollution Control Hearings Board.

But is a hard fought battle ever truly lost?

Not if we carry it forward.

Biggest Takeaways from last night's group:

  • Seattle's famous Green Drinks is still alive! But hard to find on the regular internet. Seattle's?greendrinks.org?page is not maintained, and?this one?delivers a 404 error. You have no choice but Facebook (I think this group?)
  • The phrase "conveniently laid off" is apt for the latest force of tech workers in boring industries that want new meaning in their life
  • Don't be ashamed?if you're fortunate to have the savings and need to take extra time off to job search full time. It's better! That's on them not you if they pass up a candidate that cares about personal health and the bigger picture.
  • There's?support in the community?with people in your exact situation.
  • We'll probably be talking about semantics for a while, for example: "why call it climate tech if there are other people working on climate that aren't in tech?" "What's the difference between climate tech, clean tech, green tech, eco tech, whatever tech?"
  • Let's try speed dating?for a future event!

?

New Resources:

  • The Association for Sustainable Supply Chain Management (ASCM) has the?first ever corporate certificate thing. Is it legit? I dunno. Do your research and please get back to me.
  • Big names are hiring for sustainability jobs - Boeing, Microsoft, Port of Seattle.
  • Keep an eye on?Cascadia Consulting, they're growing in July
  • There is a growing body of official "climate plans" out there for personal research and community organizing fodder.

Put your additional contribution in the comments below!

They'll be easily accessible in?The Climate Tech Handbook???
