The Biggest Problem Facing Us Today

The biggest problem facing us today is the idea of "Arrival Fallacy".
Arrival Fallacy is the belief that once you just get that promotion, buy that house, get that raise, make that sale, drive that car, pay off those loans, etc., that everything will be perfect. You will have finally arrived.
However, once you arrive, you realize it was all a fallacy.
Instead of realizing this repetitive process, we then adjust our Arrival Fallacy to the next best thing, only to find out that this too was all a huge misconception.
This reminds me of something Tom Brady, quarterback of the New England Patriots, said after winning his third Super Bowl. He had worked his entire life to be a successful NFL quarterback. This was when he was supposed to feel as though he had arrived. However, Brady said, "There has to be more than this."
The moment true success can begin is the moment we become overwhelmingly grateful for where we are and where we have come from. Success is completely mental and begins when we toss aside our Arrival Fallacy. If we fail to embrace true gratitude and thankfulness for our current circumstances, we will become caught up in the never ending cycle of Arrival Fallacy.
To combat this issue, I have started thinking of my life and career through these three statements:
1. Thankfulness for where I came from
2. Gratitude for where I am
3. Excitement for where I'm going

5 年Jonah, thank you for sharing this truth! The three steps you present - are consistent with three steps which I use at the kick-off meeting with my LMi client: 1. Where are you from? 2. Where are you today - what are your strengths? 3. Where are you going to and what should be done to reach your future.
E-book
5 年True! This is a general human mindset thing. The basic problem is in 'wanting things to be a certain way'. The basic solution is in accepting things (and people :-)) as they are. This opens up the space for being grateful. A shift of mindset is not generally an easy thing to accomplish, but using the LMI process offers the quickest route in my experience.

5 年Absolutely brilliant!?????? I would suggest that not only US suffers from the Arrival Fallacy. I would suggest that this goes for humanity as a whole. And awkwardly enough, it seems that it require a quite mature person to realize this fallacy.
