The Biggest Job Search Mistake You Are Currently Making

As I've been meeting with people 1:1 for their Job Search Strategy coaching sessions , there has been a recurring theme that's been coming up.

Something that has really been hamstringing, cutting the heels out from those folks. Almost a sense of, or a form of self-sabotage.

Now, what is that?

It's failing to start off with your Value Proposition first.

The result of failing to start with your value proposition first is confusion. It's confusion for both parties involved. It's confusion for you and confusion for the person that's receiving your story.

When you have that target in mind, that value prop in mind, and then you pick up your resume to start writing, the writing process is so much easier. The actual work and the burden will be easier when you have that focal point for your writing.

In the interview process, the easier that it is to understand you, the easier it will be to hire you. Hiring leaders need to be able to understand your value, your approach, and what the organization is ultimately going to yield from bringing you on into role.

If you can't be understood, you can't be hired.

You have got to show up on paper the way that then you'll show up in front of somebody in person, and the connecting threads are weaved throughout that whole conversation.

Ultimately, when you don't have that objective in mind and everything is not written in that same mental mindset, you lose your brand. This process that you're going through to get a job is a branding exercise. It absolutely 100% is a branding exercise.

You have got to be so clear and concise with your delivery. And yet we don't approach it in that way. We do it in such a haphazard manner, as opposed to taking a business approach, to delivering brand, your purposeful brand, and your value proposition.

Let's talk about what to do.

The first thing that you're going to do is identify your strengths. Your strengths are the activities that fuel and engage you. The things that when you're doing them, they make you feel strong, fueled. You're gaining energy. You drive towards these things at the beginning of your day.

So now you've got your value proposition identified.

Sit down, start writing those words on your resume and Linkedin profile.

Write your About section on your LinkedIn and be describing yourself based upon your value proposition.

Write, or edit your resume, with this value proposition at the forefront of your mind.

This is also how people are having jobs being crafted for them.

They step in front of a decision maker, an individual who owns a profit and lost statement, who has a set of problems putting themselves forward with a solution.

The stories, the value prop, the things that they've done before.

That operational leader can look at those things and say, "yes, I have a problem you could solve". You are the resource.

Those things marry together.

And all of a sudden, they're saying, "what do you want your job title to be? How much would you need to be paid to make this work?"

If you want a 40%, 50%, 100% pay increase, you put yourself forward in this way.

Not based upon what you were paid before, when your value prop wasn't being realized and wasn't being compensated.

But you put yourself forward saying, "Hey, I can solve and solution these things for you. What value does that bring to you?"

That's how people are getting huge pay increases.

It is based on knowing themself so that they can easily help others know them and what they would deliver.

Now, your value proposition is not just something that you perceive, that you think is valuable.

You have to check it with the organization based upon your research, based upon your networking, and based upon your conversations.

A value proposition is only valuable. If it's valuable to the person who's receiving it, the person who would be paying you.

This is the way that I would write a professional 6-figure resume . Start off with your career profile, then career highlights, next go into your work experience.

Ask yourself, does each of the jobs in your work experience deliver your stories, your strengths, your delivery, your impact, that correlates to your value prop?

Always remember, those who are easily understood are hired!

It is easier for somebody to create a custom job for you when you are clear and concise about the value and the delivery and what you will bring.
