The biggest graphic design mmisconceptions corrected

Graphic design is a field that incorporates art, science, logic, business, multiple tools, and many sub-fields. Because of this interesting and complex mix, it is subject to a number of huge misconceptions.

As a graphic designer who is super passionate about the profession, I would like to share with you my take on these misconceptions.

Do you think that a designer must be able to draw to be successful? or that the more beautiful a design is, the more impactful it is going to be?

Check the points below. You might change your mind!

x

Misconception 1: A designer must be able to draw very well.

While drawing is a useful skill to have, it is not mandatory for design work.?A basic sketching level is enough for specializations like logo, poster, and layout design.?This sketch can help create a solid foundation that the finished work is built upon.

Misconception 2: Graphic design and art are the same thing.

Graphic design and art might share similar visual principles, but they are still quite different!

Graphic design's main purpose is to solve business and communication problems. Although it has an artistic side, it is more objective and commercial.?Art is mostly used as a medium for personal expression. It is more subjective and open to interpretations.

Misconception 3: A graphic designer is just a proficient Photoshop user.??

Photoshop (or any other software) is just a tool. Using it alone is?not enough.?The mix of strategic design thinking, visual fundamentals, and business knowledge is what makes a graphic designer provide effective solutions.

Misconception 4: Simple design should be?cheap design.?

The simpler a design is, the better it is at conveying a message and making an impact. However, achieving functional simplicity is quite challenging. It needs a designer who masters the art of composition and the rules of visual communication.?

A simple design is a great design that requires more work than usual, so it is definitely worth a lot!

Misconception 5: Without a design degree you can’t be a designer.

A designer can actually create awesome work without?a design degree!

The degree might be an extra advantage in some scenarios like when applying for companies who require a design degree in the job description.?But, if the design portfolio is great and knowledge is obtained from places like?online courses, books, etc, a designer can?still stand out and get hired!

Misconception 6: If it is beautiful,?it is a good design!

Creating something that looks pretty is not the true purpose?of graphic design.

Visual appeal is important but if the design doesn't deliver a pre-defined message and solve a business problem, it is considered weak.?Graphic design is an intentional attempt at serving an objective. Looks is just a part of it.

Misconception 7: A graphic designer can create all types of designs.

There are many specializations that fall under the graphic design field. Logos, identity design, packaging, UX/UI, websites, and 3D are just a few. They might share some similarities but each one requires a unique skill set.?

A designer could be proficient in one or multiple specializations but you can’t expect them to be good at everything!

Misconception 8: Graphic design is fun and easy!

No profession is easy or fun 100% of the time.?Graphic design is exciting if you are passionate about it. But, it is also full?of challenges whether creative or?business ones.?

Tight deadlines, lack of inspiration, or dealing with difficult clients are just some examples of what a designer has to constantly handle throughout their career.

That is all!

If you have something more to add, feel free to mention it in the comments below.

1-4 speak to me very much. I can’t draw for crap. ?? Unless it’s letters / type or abstract things. Design and illustration are two different skills. I’m creative and have good taste — but not an artist. Design solves a problem. I never design in photoshop. It is a tool used to edit photos to them place in another program (indesign). Stop designing layouts in photoshop!!!! The simpler it is, the harder it was to make. This is key especially in websites or mobile apps when it comes to usability. Too many things? Usability is going to be shit. The other things I agree with too but have less to say about them.
