Biggest Global Risks in 2024

Biggest Global Risks in 2024

The World Economic Forum Global risks perception survey gathers information from 1500 global experts from business, government, civil society, academia and international community.

Here are the top 5:

1) Extreme weather made it to the top of the list. In 2023 news channels were awash with extreme weather conditions, extreme droughts and floods made the top of the list. The risk is even higher in 2024

2) Ai Generated Misinformation and Disinformation is number two on the list. Having worked on research using Ai to detect misinformation, I understand why this made it to the top of the list as a threat for the next 2 years. With the US election coming up, you know what's cooking. (a follow-up article coming soon)

3)Societal and Political polarisation. We spent the better part of 2023 witnessing coups and interstate armed conflicts, well.. it is about to get worse. Russia- Ukraine, Israel-Palestine + Yemen.

4)Cost of living crisis. There has been a lot of economic uncertainty. Heavily Indebted countries witnessing slow growth and high interest rates. The world could be staring at another economic downturn.

5)Cyber attacks remains a major concern going forward. With most developing countries digitising and making services available online, cyber security threat is a major one.

You must be wondering how the rest of the list looks like.

For AI misinformation, we leave to Grow Desk Consulting LTD to give us direction across Africa. The rest we have to do our respective parts. Mohamed Gharib thank you for putting this together.
