The Biggest Global Opportunity That Has Ever Presented Itself According to California Gov. Gavin Newsom
#2?- December 2022??????
In the first edition of Grid of the Future, we announced the relocation of SineWatts and its corporate headquarters from Charlotte, North Carolina to Bakersfield, CA - known as the energy capital of California. SineWatts is assisting the City of Bakersfield in its objectives of forming a world-class innovation hub and manufacturing center for the next-generation energy systems.
In this second edition, in addition to sharing SineWatts news and developments, we will begin to explore and share necessary guiding principles for the Grid of the Future: Dematerialization , Decarbonization , Decentralization .
We also will begin to share information and insights around the role of energy efficiency and energy intensity in the pursuit of the Grid of the Future.
A Chance to Dominate the Clean Energy Future in Kern County
As a testament to the importance of Kern County to California's past, present and future, the 2022 California Economic Summit was held in Bakersfield in October of this year. Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the summit where he discussed, among other topics, the importance of the Kern County region in achieving the state's renewable energy and climate goals.
"We have the opportunity to dominate the future. Dominate this clean energy future. To dominate the biggest global opportunity that has ever presented itself and we have the opportunity to accelerate that and lead and you (Kern County) are on the leading edge of that transition in real time and that's why I'm here (Bakersfield), to bolster this effort." - CA Governor Gavin Newsom
Governor Newsom also highlighted the leadership of local Mayor Karen Goh in helping secure $83 million to build the Energy Innovation Center at California State University, Bakersfield. We share the Governor's sentiments and gratitude for the role the Kern County community and its leaders have played historically and are playing in the evolving energy transformation.
One of the summit highlights for the SineWatts team was the opportunity to meet with Senator Steven Bradford, who authored SB 676 , the landmark vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration legislation in California. This policy provided the framework for V2G market opportunities and ultimately inspired the re-location of SineWatts to California. It was amazing to meet Senator Bradford within days of SineWatts completing the move to Bakersfield, to say the least.
With Governor Newsom and other leaders referring to vehicle to grid technology as a 'game changer' and with Kern County on the leading edge of the energy transition, SineWatts is ecstatic to further develop and demonstrate the SineWatts technology in Bakersfield. This is the place and the time is now for an evolution in energy.
COMEUP 2022 in Seoul, South Korea
Dr. Bhowmik was invited to attend and speak at COMEUP 2022 in Seoul, South Korea with the focus of the talks around doing more with less, requiring: innovation, technology advancement and policy changes.
The energy intensity of fossil fuels is orders of magnitude more than what we can do with today's batteries and solar panels and other things, which means we are using far more material and far more minerals to replace fossil fuels with renewables ... The only way we can achieve this is by figuring out how we can reduce our consumption. We have to do incredibly more with exceedingly less. - Dr. Shibashis (Shiba) Bhowmik

Dematerialization, Decarbonization, Decentralization
Enabling electric vehicles to bidirectionally engage the electric grid will increase its decentralization, lower its costs and rapidly lower emissions a recent MIT study finds.
Savings are driven first by displacement of stationary storage, and second by reductions in firm generation capacity and shifts in renewable generation portfolios.
The need for dematerialization of the grid as we know it is exemplified by the shortage of transformers and the increasing demands on the grid as we electrify transportation and onboard intermittent renewable energy. What happens if an increasing number of EVs are charged at night?
What would otherwise last a lifetime, distribution transformers could get lowered to just 3 years of useful life. This is becoming a serious concern especially with unmanaged night-time charging (aka off-peak EV charging) as EV adoption increases. Addressing this issue, is an enormous undertaking due to a perfect storm in the making.
It'll require new, much heavier transformers and upgrading the poles mounting them with millions of these scattered throughout the U.S. Transformers are currently in severe shortage with 38-month lead times with a vast majority (82%) of utility transformers imported into the U.S. from overseas. During the estimating period, prices have gone up - to $20,000 from $3,000-$4,000 each.
It's estimated that US utilities will need $1 trillion in upgrades by 2035, probably far more. How will these costs be allocated to ratepayers? How and to who are the costs of EV incentives being allocated?
For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled. - Richard Feynman, Nobel Prize-winning physicist
Energy Intensity & Energy Efficiency
The 2022 IEA Net Zero by 2050 report highlights the need for a complete energy technology transformation. The roadmap wants energy intensity reduction, year-over-year, at 3X the rate we did during the previous 52 years.
Meanwhile, Researchers in Germany have utilized sinusoidal nanotexturing with a hexagonal arrangement coupled with light trapping reflective back layer to further perfect the perovskite-silicon tandem cell leading to 30% efficiency with a 95% yield.
Our footprint reduction and systemic energy efficiency gains are the fastest emission reduction tools in the?sustainability?toolkit and in advancing our future.
