If you are a real estate geek like me ??, you’ll really enjoy this 3-minute video.
The video tracks the growth of fast food brands by unit count from 1971-2019. I added a bit of commentary to the video.
A few trends of note that jumped out at me include:
?? In the early ‘70’s, Subway had just 6 units and KFC US was the dominant player by a very wide margin
?? McDonald's grew quickly in the mid-‘70’s and was the leader by 1976
?? In 1980, McDonald’s and KFC were neck-in-neck for top spot with Subway just breaking past 100 units
?? In the late ‘80’s, Subway took off with turbo-charged growth adding thousands of units
?? As of the year 2000, McDonald’s led by a wide margin with Subway quickly adding units and Starbucks starting to grow quickly
?? By 2008, Starbucks and Subway were quickly gaing on McDonald’s
?? In 2009, Subway took over the top spot where McDonald’s had stood since 1976
?? In spite of declining unit counts in recent years, Subway remains #1 followed very closely by McDonalds??and then Starbucks??
Hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.
