biggest fallacy in the job market

The biggest fallacy with the job market is that we think moving to another job will make us happier or less burntout.?????????

I was talking to a client yesterday who was saying she just needs to leave the job she has in order to get a better work-life balance. She's burntout. She feels like she can't unplug and has to respond to every email. Why can't her colleagues just stop responding too? Can we make a pact that we'll stop emailing after 6 PM?

She kept saying that she just needs to get out of there in order to truly enjoy time with her family outside of work.

So many of my clients start in this same boat. "I just need to leave this industry, this company, this job."?????????

We think that is the problem - the situation we're in. But that's not it.?????????

What's really the problem are the habits we have around the workplace. How we show up at work and at home.?????????

A client recently landed the job he wanted - just a few weeks into our coaching together. At first, he was so excited. "Woohoo! Everything is going to be better now!"?????????

But then, that first week in he confided that he was feeling burntout again. Because we hadn't fully dealt with the actual issues yet (how his brain works around work) - he'd just changed his circumstance, his job environment.?????????

This is why we all know people who are rich and unhappy - and people who are rich and happy. The money (or the job) has nothing to do with being happy. Happiness comes from inside, not out.?????????

So we've been working on boundaries, putting himself first, allowing himself to fully unplug, managing other's expectations (and his own). He's stopped responding to emails right away and he's already noticing a change.?????????

Because burnout is just a habit. We can create it anywhere and we can work to change it anywhere.

You have to try and set up good work habits that can insulate you from burn out whatever the job. Realistically, it's not always possible but it's the one part of the equation that you can control.
