I moved to the US as a Ph.D. student 30yrs ago.
On the day that I met my advisor, the conversation was awkward.
Prof: do you like Chinese?
Me: yeah, why not.
Prof: let’s go get some Chinese
Me: what???
(I was really shocked that on the first day of our meeting he already so openly mentioning that we would go to a prostitute. However, being Egyptian, I was so polite not to question anything but to follow him to his car)
During driving, I kept praying that my professor doesn’t hate me even when I refuse to hire one….
Never in my life that I hired a prostitute. So I was really nervous.
After driving 20 minutes, we arrived at a Chinese restaurant and we ordered some food.
I was so relieved knowing that “Chinese” means Chinese foods.
at school, we learned: Chinese, German, Portuguese, Indian, Italian as nouns referring to humans; while for food Chinese food, are adjective+noun. Likewise Italian food and Arabian food.
