The biggest chokehold in your business is also its biggest opportunity.

The biggest chokehold in your business is also its biggest opportunity.

Let’s break this down. I remember clearly, a few years back, watching an interview with Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur behind SpaceX and Tesla. He was sharing insights about the challenges and complexities of manufacturing automobiles on a massive scale.

Now, imagine for a second the immense difficulty of setting up a gigantic manufacturing plant and pushing out hundreds of cars every single day. Sounds daunting, right? One particular statement from Musk, however, grabbed my attention and got me thinking.

In the beginning, the Tesla team was laser-focused on building their electric cars, as you’d expect. They managed to scale production to a certain point, but weren’t getting to their desired result. Then, a light bulb went on for them. Musk explained how they discovered a strategy that led to a significant improvement in the result they were looking for. Surprisingly, it was not by focusing on the end product, the car itself. Counterintuitive, isn’t it?

They began investing their time and energy into perfecting the machines that were building the cars. By enhancing the robots and systems that made the vehicles, they saw remarkable changes in their production process and output.

They achieved an order of magnitude greater result by focusing on the machine that built the machine.

That got me thinking about the countless business owners I’ve worked with over the years as a business coach and mentor. Just like Tesla, many of these business owners were heavily focused on their end product or service but were not getting the result they desired. I mean, it makes sense to grow the business by focusing on the business.

Inspired by Musk’s revelation, I encouraged them to shift their focus. Instead of solely concentrating on their businesses, I urged them to spend time working on themselves — the business owners who were building the businesses. I discovered the same thing.

The best way to grow a business is to build the business owner that builds the business.

By focusing on improving themselves as leaders, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers, they saw a significant shift in their businesses. Better inputs always create better outputs.

When the business owner elevates their thinking and skillset, the decisions they make for their businesses come from a more informed, higher perspective, leading to better outcomes overall. You are where you are today because of your level of mindset and skillset.

What got you here will not get you there.

Here’s a metaphor for you — think of a ship and its captain. The speed, attitude, and direction of the ship is the speed, attitude, and direction of the captain. In the same way, a business reflects its owner’s mindset, decisions, and attitudes.

After working with over 1000 business owners, I’ve come to understand that the biggest chokehold in any business is the business owner.

However, this also means that you, as the business owner, represent your business’s most significant opportunity for growth. If you’re not playing the game at the level required for your business to succeed, it’s only going to hinder your progress. You can’t just work in your business; you must also work on yourself. Your personal growth, decision-making power, skillset, and mindset are all crucial for the rapid advancement of your business.

Let me repeat — you are where you are today because of your mindset and skillset. But the things that got you to this point won’t necessarily get you to the next level.

You must continually evolve, level up, focus on improving yourself, and build the machine behind the machine.

When you invest in yourself, it’s amazing how different your decision making starts to be. It’s like climbing a mountain; you can see a much different perspective from a higher plane and can make better decisions when elevated. As opposed to being on the ground where the grass and trees get in your way.

By investing in yourself and your growth, you’re making a strategic decision that will help your business thrive. You’re opening up an entirely new world of possibilities for yourself and your business. You’re not just improving your present; you’re ensuring a successful future.

After all, the biggest chokehold in your business is also its most significant opportunity.

It’s all in your hands. Are you ready to take charge?
