The biggest challenge in my career

The biggest challenge in my career

Hey Friends,

Settle in for the 6th installment of "From Trainee to CEO." ?Your engagement has been fantastic, so we're extending this series. ?Keep those questions and suggestions coming – they inspire great content.

Recently, I had the honor of attending the Stickland Women’s Leadership Summit at High Point University. ?There, I witnessed young women preparing to lead. ?Many are already taking on leadership roles in their community and at HPU.

During a mentoring session, someone asked me about my career's biggest challenge. ?Without hesitation, I said: childcare. ?I have two children, now young adults, who've navigated life with a career-focused mom. ?Thankfully, they're doing well.? Despite storm clouds and rainbow chases alike, "normal" is our true north.

Achieving a sense of normalcy often feels like an underrated achievement yet reflecting on my bustling days traversing the skies and the vibrant streets of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania reaching a state of "normal" is quite an accomplishment. ?In hindsight, it's clear that the diverse array of cultures, traditions, and flavors my children were exposed to through our lifestyle and our experiences has enriched their perspectives. ?They've developed a genuine appreciation for global diversity and an empathy for those with different life experiences. ?This exposure has shaped them into individuals who are approachable, broad-minded, and inclined to look beyond the surface to understand the world around them.

When I had to decide which avenue to go to for my childcare, I selected the world of Au Pairs.? Venturing from distant lands to our bustling American life, these young linguists and future world shapers swapped stories and laughter with us. ?Picture it: 28 spirited Au Pairs from the worlds of Taiwan to our closer friends in the U.K., these young women became a part of our clan over 19 magical years. ?From a whirlwind three-day exchange to a heartfelt three-year bond, our home became a global crossroads. ?The goal was for each to stay at least a year, some made it even longer and some moved on within days. ?Today, many of them are considered part of our extended family.

?Now, let's explore the nuggets of wisdom from this adventure:

  • Childcare meets career isn’t a one-size-fits-all map; it's bespoke, and only you can craft it. ?If the trail gets rocky, switch paths. ?You’ll recognize the home base by its comforting glow.
  • As your children grow, don't be afraid to recalibrate your compass based on the terrain.
  • Impossible is just a myth; families and careers do mix. ?Choices are your milestones – know your boundaries and explore boldly.
  • Ditch the guilt – it's like carrying stones in your backpack. ?Go lighter and further.
  • They'll miss your bedtime stories, but they'll cherish the adventures they create with you when you are together.
  • You’ll miss some curtain calls but ensure you are in the front row for the grandest performances.
  • Time is a treasure – it's not about the volume but the value.
  • When traveling far distances, let video chats be your bridge home.
  • Keep a picture of your “mini-you's” in your suitcase – it's a talisman that echoes, "You are loved".

Navigating the complexities of childcare in pursuit of a career is no walk in the park; it's a sometimes pricey and weary journey. ?But remember, you're in good company as you travel through life. ?Enjoy every moment together and keep your eyes on the summit where the views – filled with the laughter and love of family – are incomparable.

So, till our paths cross again on this quest, know that while the choices aren't easy, the rewards are like stardust on your soul.? You’ve got this!

So beautifully written, Joy! And yes, childcare is definitely a major challenge when trying to find balance between wanting a family and a satisfying career. However, like you, i merged the two every possible way and now my adult daughters voice their pride in their “boss-lady mom”, they cherish the anecdotes I often relay to them from my past travels and they enjoy the front row seats of the action when I invite them to join me on a work trip. Nothing is more satisfying than that!

I remember when you talked about your daughter and how much you showed the proud and anxious you were. Sounds like she takes after you 100%.
