Jeff McGehee , Sr. Director of Engineering for Very

“I think the greatest barrier to enterprise adoption of IoT is the complexity and access to talent that understands this complexity holistically. Engineering a connected ecosystem presents unique challenges. There will always be surprises (even if your team is experienced), it's a steep learning curve, and most enterprises don’t have the right mix of skills in-house to work through that complexity successfully on the first try. The complexity also makes it difficult to project what the investment in time and resources should be to reach an MVP. Using the Agile methodology can mitigate some of that, but if Waterfall is entrenched in your company's DNA, it's going to be an uphill battle to deliver demonstrable value in a reasonable time.”

Steve Carr , Consultant for WiTTRA Networks AB

“I believe that the current lack of unification in the Internet of Things (IoT) presents a significant challenge in the field. I also believe that to effectively address this challenge, there needs to be a multi-protocol approach that considers the varying requirements and use cases of different devices and systems. This, in turn, requires collaboration and cooperation between manufacturers, developers, and standards organizations. Although some progress has been made in the smart home sector, there is still much work to be done, especially in the B2B arena. Until a common framework is established and adopted industry-wide, the lack of unification in IoT will remain a hindrance to realizing its full potential.”

Alexis Leibbrandt , Head of Marketing at akenza.io ?

“The successful implementation of an IoT solution is complex as it requires specific technical knowledge. IT experts are often needed to connect hardware, the connectivity layer, and the cloud to generate usable data. However, these specialists are not the ones with domain knowledge benefiting from IoT. Outsourcing technical experts to help solve IoT problems increases budget and, in some cases, creates delays and other friction points. For this reason, I believe that technical complexity is still a barrier to IoT adoption, and we need to shift towards low-code, straightforward solutions, making IoT accessible to a wider range of innovators.”

I believe that IoT adoption is often hindered because companies aren't always doing a good job of showcasing their solution's success. IoT is the least sexy of the emerging tech frontiers. Because of this, I believe as an industry we need to do a better job of showing successful applications in a creative and engaging fashion that provokes intrigue from those who previously thought IoT wasn't a solution or option for them.

Great to see Jeff McGehee on this list. Loved the insights from the other leaders as well.

Although all reasons mentioned in the article are very valid, I believe there is another one worth to consider (and sometimes the elephant in the room) which is providing a clear view of the solutions' RoI with facts and data. Conceptually, there are hundreds of use cases everyone can relate and agree, but is when it comes to the investment vs results conversation when it can become challenging and, clearly, a barrier for the customers to buy more IoT solutions. Customers will buy anything that confidently will provide them value in their business (savings, operational improvements, energy efficiency, better customer experience, etc.) but we'll see a barrier and delays in decision making if the proposal does not deliver a good and factual view of those benefits. Integrating different technologies and specialized vendors to build solutions solving customer needs is a good way to take down this important barrier.

A big barrier I am seeing through recent podcast conversations with guests are the hesitation from decision makers within organizations to move forward with bringing an IoT solution into their business. This has been driven by a lack of understanding around the potential ROI, as well as the "if it's not broken why fix it" mindset. One thing I think can really help is for companies to dedicate more time to showcasing success stories and case studies with the content aimed at particular industries, problems, and even roles within an organization. As these decision makers start to see relatable problems being solved with IoT, or other companies in their industry being successful with solution adoption, it will hopefully become more clear as to what the potential ROI is and why their business should start their IoT journey
