Bigger isn't necessarily better!

As I celebrate my second year work anniversary, I find myself reflecting on what I appreciate most about working for a small company. I’ve been fortunate to have worked for different sizes of organizations, small, medium and large. I have to say, I have probably grown more professionally in the last 2 years than anywhere else.

The wonderful opportunities that I’ve had and didn’t expect with a small organization are:

  • Being empowered to make changes where there are inefficiencies.
  • Flexibility to make the job work and suit your lifestyle.
  • Sense of community; working within smaller working groups you create friendships. When we’re among friends, not strangers, the company is one big team and celebrate each other’s successes.
  • Opportunity to get involved in other areas of the company and wear multiple hats.
  • See the direct impact our work has on the company as a whole.
  • With changes in the global market, we remain nimble and can adjust our strategies to remain ahead of the curve, and or larger counterparts.
  • Within a smaller organization, we have fewer management layers and get more visibility by the leadership team.
  • Gain a better understanding of what everyone does within my organization and how each role is important and impacts the whole team.

I’ve been afforded the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and gain a greater skill set and look forward to many more years to come because bigger isn’t always better!

Great to see that! I couldn't agree more with you. When I left the Largest Retailer in Canada years back, I was referred for Director of Store Operations, to a small Family Retail Business that was enjoying sucess at the time. All the points you raised are 100% on the money! That Retailer was Jacob, that became the #1 Retailer in every Mall in Canada, Sales per Sq ft. Having a wonderful opportunity to introduce new approaches to do what needed to be done, utilizing my StoreOps & HR Expertise, was a win-win for both parties!
