Bigger Isn't Always Better. A CHOR's Insight in Hiring a Recruiting Firm

I was speaking with one of my new favorite healthcare leaders in the HR space.

This fellow has worked the talent side himself many years and now runs an organization spanning across multiple states, with dozens of hospitals and hundreds of non-acute services.

I am trying to understand the world of a Chief of Human Resources more and what they value in using a recruitment firm.

He tells me, “I just used (a certain firm I will not mention) and we have been a bit disappointed with them lately. They are part of the “Who’s Who” list in Recruiting Firms, yet when they engage you with a search you get a Junior of a Junior helping you.”

This intrigued me because I run a boutique firm and just decided late last night I am changing the name to Polonsky and Associates Inc.

The CHOR proceeds to tell me, “When I am working with a firm paying them money upfront and having them work on a big-time position of ours, I want to be working with the source, or at least someone who is not layers removed from the head of the company.”

I had never heard this before but it makes so much sense.

Sometimes bigger isn’t better.

You know when you go away and stay at a B&B or a Boutique Hotel and you can literally walk up to the person who owns it, or they are sharing great tips about excursions, sights, and those amazing “only locals know this” kind of information.

Well, that is what he is saying you are probably not going to get with a big company with a myriad of layers.

If your company is looking to hire a firm make sure you ask the important questions regarding the working relationship and who will be involved in this project.

We are going to make sure that our company uses this as a marketing and selling piece to organizations and CHOR’s that are looking for a firm.

This is why as a company we have decided on the company name change and to remain small and hyper-focused with our finger on the pulse of the industry of leadership roles in hospitals in California.
